01 — Overview

From Shenzhen to Hong Kong, the easiest way is one car all the way

Shenzhen and Hong Kong sit just a river apart, but "getting across" is not as simple as driving over—there are only a handful of land crossings that allow vehicles through, and ordinary mainland or Hong Kong cars cannot freely drive across the border. For most people, the truly hassle-free option is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver that takes you straight from your Shenzhen pickup address to your Hong Kong destination, stopping only at the port for clearance—no changing vehicles, no dragging luggage onto a connecting service.

02 — Crossings

Only a few crossings allow vehicles through—know them before you choose

Most crossings between Shenzhen and Hong Kong are rail- or pedestrian-only (such as Luohu and Futian). The ones that truly allow vehicles through are below. For late-night and red-eye flights, prioritise Huanggang, which operates 24 hours.

Note: Luohu and Futian (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line) are rail- and pedestrian-only and do not allow vehicles. Shenzhen Bay uses "co-location clearance"—both Shenzhen and Hong Kong checks are completed once inside the same building on the Shenzhen side, with no need to transfer to a connecting service between the two sides. Drive times are experience-based estimate ranges that include clearance and are heavily affected by port queues, traffic and time of day; peak periods, public holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings are usually longer. 04 — Clearance Process

One car all the way, how clearance works

The advantage of a licensed cross-border MPV is one car and one driver throughout—you simply complete immigration clearance at the port.

05 — Why a charter

Why can't you just drive to Hong Kong yourself?

For cross-border driving, both the vehicle and the driver must be approved first. Regular quotas (commonly known as dual plates / Yue-Z plates) require approval from the Guangdong public security authorities, plus a Closed Road Permit (CRP) from the Hong Kong Transport Department—and regular quotas are granted under strict conditions and are extremely hard to obtain. Temporary quotas only allow a Hong Kong private car a single northbound trip via Shenzhen Bay; the "HK Vehicles Going North" scheme lets Hong Kong cars travel between Hong Kong and Guangdong via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, with a ballot and a daily quota—none of these solve the need to "ride from downtown Shenzhen straight to downtown Hong Kong".

Ordinary mainland or Hong Kong cars, without dual plates or the relevant permit, cannot legally cross the border freely. This is exactly why a "licensed cross-border MPV + professional driver" has become the mainstream option for point-to-point SZ–HK transfers.

Before you set off, the things people ask most

Which crossings between Shenzhen and Hong Kong allow vehicles through?
The land crossings that allow private cars / passenger vehicles through are Lok Ma Chau (Huanggang), Shenzhen Bay, Heung Yuen Wai (Liantang), and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge connecting towards Zhuhai and Macao; Luohu and Futian (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line) are rail- and pedestrian-only and do not allow vehicles.
Which SZ–HK crossing is open 24 hours?
The only 24-hour land crossing between Shenzhen and Hong Kong is Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau; the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge crossing is also 24 hours. The Shenzhen Bay private-car channel operates 06:30–24:00, so for late-night travel you must switch to Huanggang.
What does Shenzhen Bay's "co-location clearance" mean?
It means both the Shenzhen and Hong Kong immigration checks are completed in one go inside the same joint-inspection building on the Shenzhen side, with no need to transfer to a connecting service between the two sides. Hong Kong Government documents cite Shenzhen Bay's "co-location clearance" as the model for the new Huanggang crossing.
Can I just drive my own mainland / Hong Kong car straight to Hong Kong / Shenzhen?
No. Cross-border driving requires both the vehicle and the driver to be approved: a regular quota needs Guangdong public security approval + a Hong Kong Transport Department Closed Road Permit (dual plates); otherwise you can only use a temporary quota (a Hong Kong car, single trip via Shenzhen Bay) or "HK Vehicles Going North" (a Hong Kong car via the Bridge). Quotas are scarce and the threshold is high, which is why most people choose a licensed cross-border charter.
Can "HK Vehicles Going North" get me from Shenzhen to Hong Kong by car?
It does not directly meet that need. "HK Vehicles Going North" is for Hong Kong private cars heading north into Guangdong via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HK→Guangdong), and it requires a ballot, a daily quota and use of the Bridge; it does not provide a "downtown Shenzhen straight to downtown Hong Kong" transfer.
What documents do mainland residents need to visit Hong Kong?
You must hold an Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) with a valid endorsement (individual G / group L / business / family visit, etc.); foreign travellers use a passport, with visa-free entry or a visa as applicable to their nationality. For the specific endorsement category, please refer to the National Immigration Administration and Hong Kong Immigration Department pages.
How long is it from Futian / Luohu in Shenzhen to Tsim Sha Tsui?
Under normal traffic, about 45–75 minutes (via Huanggang or Shenzhen Bay, including clearance); during peak periods, public holidays and weekends, port waiting times are noticeably longer. We recommend allowing flexible time.
