From Zhuhai to Hong Kong, the route is the HZMB

The only direct road link between Zhuhai and Hong Kong is the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge: cross at Zhuhai Port to the Hong Kong Port, open 24 hours, with no need to detour through Shenzhen's Huanggang or Shenzhen Bay ports. The Shenzhen-side ports only come into play for the special itinerary of going to Shenzhen first, which is clearly a much longer journey.

Note: the HZMB uses "three jurisdictions, three inspections" — Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao each operate independent ports for separate clearance, with the Zhuhai and Macao ports adjacent on the artificial island. The HK Port is about 42 km from the Zhuhai / Macao ports across the bridge. Ordinary mainland or Hong Kong vehicles cannot enter freely and require the relevant cross-border permit. 05 — Why not a self-drive rental

Why can't a Zhuhai rental drive into Hong Kong?

For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. To travel legally between Guangdong and Hong Kong, the vehicle needs a Guangdong-Hong Kong dual licence plate (a Yue Z plate on the mainland side) plus a Closed Road Permit (CRP) issued by the Transport Department. That quota is chronically scarce with a high application bar, mostly aimed at companies that meet Guangdong investment / tax criteria, and is extremely hard for individuals to obtain. Carrying passengers for hire also requires a separate hire car permit, or it is illegal operation. The "Hong Kong Vehicles Going North" scheme launched in 2023 only allows eligible Hong Kong private cars to travel north into Guangdong via the HZMB — that is the "HK car into the mainland" direction, and it does not let a Zhuhai or mainland rental drive into Hong Kong.
