Zhongshan → Hong Kong · Rental vs. Chauffeured
Car Rental from Zhongshan to Hong Kong
Understand the self-drive hurdles first, then pick the easy way
Thinking of renting a car in Zhongshan to drive into Hong Kong? The reality: ordinary mainland-plated or rented cars cannot freely cross the border — both vehicle and driver must be approved first. This guide spells out the dual-plate, "Northbound for Hong Kong Vehicles" and "Southbound for Guangdong Vehicles" rules. We do not offer self-drive rental; we provide dual-plate, professionally chauffeured cross-border charters, door-to-door from your Zhongshan address into Hong Kong.
01 — Overview
From Zhongshan to Hong Kong, "rent and self-drive" simply doesn't work
Many assume you can just rent a car like you would on the mainland and drive into Hong Kong, but cross-border driving is a different matter. Only a handful of land crossings allow vehicles, and an ordinary Zhongshan-plated or rented mainland car — without a dual-plate or the right quota — simply cannot legally pass the control points. Hong Kong's Transport Department is clear: both the vehicle and the driver must be approved first. For Zhongshan residents, getting your own car across is high-barrier and the quota is hard to win. The practical option is a dual-plate cross-border business van with a professional driver, taking you straight from your Zhongshan address to your Hong Kong destination.
We've run Greater Bay cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned business vans and 50,000+ clients served. Below we lay out which crossing to use, how long it takes, why self-drive is so hard, and whether "Northbound" / "Southbound" schemes can actually help you.

02 — Crossings
Only a few crossings take vehicles — know them before you choose
Most crossings between Shenzhen / Zhuhai and Hong Kong are rail or pedestrian only; the ones that genuinely allow vehicles are below. Zhongshan sits on the west bank of the Pearl River: for the city core, most go via the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link to Shenzhen and Shenzhen Bay; for the airport / Disneyland, going through Zhuhai over the HZMB is smoother — the bridge's HK port is right next to the airport.

Note: the HZMB uses "three-place, three-check" (Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao ports each clear separately), runs 24 hours, and its HK port adjoins the airport; Shenzhen Bay uses "co-location" — Hong Kong and mainland checks sit in one building on the Shenzhen side, private-car lanes 06:30–24:00. Lok Ma Chau / Huanggang 24h, Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai 07:00–22:00, Man Kam To mainly freight. Hours and vehicle eligibility per the HK Immigration Department control-point page (see sources).
03 — Indicative pricing
Zhongshan → Hong Kong indicative fares for popular routes
Below are one-way indicative fares for a 7-seat business van (Alphard / V-Class). The actual quote depends on pickup area, destination, time slot and crossing, and includes driver, tolls and port transfer; final confirmation applies. Zhongshan is farther from Hong Kong, so fares run higher than from Shenzhen; the south of Zhongshan (Sanxiang / Tanzhou), nearer Zhuhai and the bridge, can be slightly lower.

| Route | Typical link / crossing | Est. travel time | 7-seat fare (one way) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zhongshan city → Tsim Sha Tsui / Kowloon | SZ-ZS Link → Shenzhen Bay | ~150–210 min | from HK$ 1,700 |
| Zhongshan city → Central / HK Island | SZ-ZS Link → Shenzhen Bay | ~160–220 min | from HK$ 1,900 |
| Zhongshan city → HK Airport (HKG) | Zhuhai → HZMB | ~150–210 min | from HK$ 1,700 |
| Zhongshan city → Hong Kong Disneyland | HZMB / SZ-ZS Link | ~160–220 min | from HK$ 1,800 |
| South Zhongshan (Sanxiang / Tanzhou) → Airport / Disneyland | Zhuhai → HZMB | ~120–180 min | from HK$ 1,500 |
Travel times are experience-based ranges including clearance and vary a lot with port queues, traffic and time of day; peaks, holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings usually take longer. For a 23-seat Coaster, round trips or full-day hire, please request a separate quote.
04 — Clearance flow
One car all the way, how clearance works
With a dual-plate cross-border business van it's one car and one driver the whole way; you only need to complete immigration checks at the crossing — no dragging luggage to transfer.
- STEP 1 · PickupThe driver arrives at your Zhongshan address at the agreed time to collect you and your luggage
- STEP 2 · Cross / enter cityVia the SZ-ZS Link straight to Shenzhen, or through Zhuhai to the HZMB
- STEP 3 · ClearanceShenzhen Bay "co-location" done in one building; HZMB "three-place, three-check" per current arrangements
- STEP 4 · DirectAfter clearance, the same car continues straight to your Hong Kong destination — no change, no transfer
05 — Why not self-drive
Why a Zhongshan rental can't self-drive to Hong Kong
For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. The usual route is a "dual-plate" licence (a Yue-Z plate on the mainland side), which needs prior approval from Guangdong's public-security traffic authority, then an International Circulation Permit (ICP) and Closed Road Permit (CRP) from HK's Transport Department — and regular quotas are extremely scarce, aimed mainly at firms with substantial investment or tax in Guangdong, so individuals and rentals almost never get one. The convenience schemes are limited too: "Northbound for Hong Kong Vehicles" (since Jul 2023) only lets HK-registered private cars head north over the bridge — not available to Zhongshan residents; "Southbound for Guangdong Vehicles" began accepting eligible Guangdong private cars into urban Hong Kong via the bridge from 9 Dec 2025, but it's new and quota-limited. Either way, renting a car in Zhongshan to drive into Hong Kong just doesn't work.
An ordinary Zhongshan-plated or rented mainland car, without a dual-plate or the right permit, cannot legally cross the border. That's exactly why a "dual-plate cross-border business van + professional driver" is the mainstream choice for point-to-point transfers — the vehicle's CRP / ICP and the driver's credentials are all handled by the operator, nothing for the passenger to arrange.
