01 — Overview

From Zhongshan to Hong Kong, one car all the way is the easy way

Zhongshan sits on the west bank of the Pearl River, right next to Zhuhai. Since the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link opened in June 2024, Zhongshan is directly connected to Shenzhen and the road to Hong Kong is far smoother. But crossing the border is not as simple as just driving over. Only a handful of land ports take vehicles, and an ordinary Zhongshan-plate mainland car or a Hong Kong car cannot freely drive across. For most people, the easy way is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver that takes you from your Zhongshan address straight to your Hong Kong destination, clearing customs only at the port, with no vehicle change and no luggage transfer.

We have run Greater Bay Area cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs and 50,000+ customers served. Below we explain which port to choose, how long the drive takes, how clearance works, and why self-driving is so hard.

02 — Ports

Only a few ports take vehicles, so know them before you choose

From Zhongshan there are two main routes: take the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link to Shenzhen and clear at Shenzhen Bay for Kowloon and HK Island; or go via Zhuhai onto the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge straight toward the airport and Disneyland. For late nights and red-eye flights, prioritise the 24-hour HZMB Bridge and Huanggang.

Zhongshan to Hong Kong cross-border ports: HZMB Bridge 24h vehicle-capable, Shenzhen Bay 06:30-24:00 co-location, Huanggang/Lok Ma Chau 24h, Heung Yuen Wai 07:00-22:00

Note: the HZMB Bridge uses three separate checkpoints, where the Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao ports each clear independently, and the Hong Kong port sits next to the airport. Shenzhen Bay uses co-location clearance, where both sides clear once in the same building on the Shenzhen side, with no need to transfer between locations. Man Kam To mainly handles cross-border trucks and is little used by passenger cars. Opening hours and vehicle status follow the official Hong Kong government control point pages (see sources at the foot).

03 — Reference prices

Zhongshan → Hong Kong reference prices for common routes

The figures below are one-way reference prices for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class). Zhongshan is fairly far from Hong Kong, so prices typically start around HK$1,700. Actual quotes depend on the pickup area, destination, time and port, and include driver, tolls and port connection; final confirmation applies.

Zhongshan to Hong Kong reference prices: Tsim Sha Tsui from HK$1700, Central/HK Island from HK$1800, HKG Airport from HK$1900, Disneyland from HK$1900

Drive times are experience-based estimates including clearance and are strongly affected by port queues, traffic and time of day; peaks, public holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings usually take longer. South Zhongshan (Sanxiang / Tanzhou), being close to Zhuhai and the bridge, can be slightly cheaper. For a 23-seat Coaster, return trips or full-day charter, please ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance

One car all the way, how clearance works

The benefit of a licensed cross-border MPV is one car and one driver the whole way; you only need to complete immigration checks at the port.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
The driver arrives at your Zhongshan pickup address at the agreed time to collect you and load luggage
  • STEP 2 · Exit
Drive to the port via the SZ-ZS Link or Zhuhai and complete mainland exit checks
  • STEP 3 · Entry
Shenzhen Bay co-location clears in one building; HZMB Bridge / Huanggang handle Hong Kong entry per current arrangements
  • STEP 4 · Direct
After clearance, the same car goes straight to your Hong Kong destination, no change, no transfer

05 — Why charter

Why can't you just drive your own car to Hong Kong?

For cross-border driving, both the vehicle and the driver must be approved first. The regular quota (commonly called a dual-plate / Yue-Z plate) requires approval from Guangdong police plus a Closed Road Permit (CRP) from the Hong Kong Transport Department, and the regular quota is strict to obtain and mainly aimed at firms with substantial investment and tax in Guangdong, so individuals rarely get one. The urban part of the "Guangdong cars southbound" scheme has accepted eligible Guangdong private cars via the bridge since 9 December 2025, but it is new and quotas are limited; "Hong Kong cars northbound" is limited to Hong Kong-registered private cars and does not apply to mainland Zhongshan residents. None of these easily solves the need to ride from Zhongshan straight into urban Hong Kong.

An ordinary Zhongshan-plate mainland car or a Hong Kong car, without a dual plate or the matching permit, cannot legally cross the border freely. That is exactly why a licensed cross-border MPV plus a professional driver is the mainstream choice for point-to-point Guangdong-Hong Kong transfers.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Can I just drive my own Zhongshan car to Hong Kong?
In principle, no, not freely. A Zhongshan-plate mainland private car needs either a "Guangdong cars southbound" quota (the urban part has accepted eligible Guangdong private cars via the HZMB Bridge since 9 December 2025, with limited quotas) or a dual plate to enter Hong Kong at designated ports. Otherwise an ordinary Zhongshan-plate car cannot clear, so most people choose a licensed cross-border charter.
Which port is fastest from Zhongshan to Hong Kong?
It depends on the destination. For Kowloon and HK Island, most take the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link to Shenzhen and then Shenzhen Bay (private cars 06:30 to 00:00). For the airport, Disneyland and Tung Chung, going via Zhuhai onto the HZMB Bridge (24h) is smoother, and the bridge's Hong Kong port sits next to the airport.
How do clearance methods differ between the HZMB Bridge and Shenzhen Bay?
The HZMB Bridge uses three separate checkpoints, where the Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao ports each clear independently. Shenzhen Bay uses co-location, where Hong Kong and mainland checks sit in the same building on the Shenzhen side, so the process is more concentrated.
What documents do I need for a cross-border charter?
Mainland residents bring an Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao plus a valid Hong Kong endorsement; foreign visitors bring a passport and a Hong Kong visa or visa-free entry eligibility; accompanying children bring their own valid documents. Vehicle plate, driver qualifications and ICP / CRP are handled by the licensed operator, so passengers need not arrange them.
What are the opening hours of each port?
HZMB Bridge Hong Kong port 24 hours; Shenzhen Bay private cars 06:30 to 00:00, trucks 24 hours; Lok Ma Chau / Huanggang 24 hours; Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai 07:00 to 22:00; Man Kam To 07:00 to 22:00 (mainly trucks). Subject to Immigration Department announcements.
How long does Zhongshan to Hong Kong take?
About 2.5 to 3.5 hours including clearance (depending on traffic and port queues; south Zhongshan, Sanxiang / Tanzhou, near Zhuhai is shorter). Peaks, public holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings see noticeably longer port waits, so allow buffer time.
Can Zhongshan residents use "Hong Kong cars northbound"?
No. Since 1 July 2023, "Hong Kong cars northbound" has been limited to eligible Hong Kong-registered private cars going north into Guangdong via the HZMB Bridge, and does not apply to mainland Zhongshan residents. For travel to Hong Kong, look at the "Guangdong cars southbound" quota or choose a dual-plate cross-border charter.
