01 — Overview

From Zhaoqing to Hong Kong, one car the whole way is the easy way

Zhaoqing sits on the west bank of the Pearl River, further from Hong Kong than Shenzhen or Zhongshan. Driving yourself means a long haul, and ordinary mainland plates cannot cross the border freely. For most families and business travellers, the simplest option is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver, taking you from your Zhaoqing address straight to your Hong Kong destination, clearing only at the port, with no vehicle change and no luggage transfers between sides.

02 — Ports

Only a few ports take vehicles, so know them before you choose

Most Shenzhen–Hong Kong crossings are rail or pedestrian only (such as Lo Wu and Futian). Only a handful actually take vehicles. From Zhaoqing, heading east via the Guangzhou–Shenzhen corridor usually means Shenzhen Bay; for late nights or red-eye flights, the 24-hour Huanggang port; and to stay on the west bank and avoid Shenzhen, cross via the HZMB Zhuhai port.

Note: Lo Wu and Futian (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line) are rail and pedestrian only and do not take vehicles. Shenzhen Bay uses "co-location" clearance — both sides' immigration are completed in one building on the Shenzhen side, with no transfer between the two jurisdictions; the HZMB uses "three-place inspection". One car the whole way, how clearance works

The advantage of a licensed cross-border MPV is one car and one driver throughout — you only need to complete immigration checks at the port.

05 — Why charter

Why can't you just drive to Hong Kong yourself?

To drive across the border, both the vehicle and the driver must be approved first. Traditional cross-border driving requires "dual plates" (a Guangdong Yue-Z plate plus a Hong Kong plate), together with a regular quota from the Guangdong authorities and a Closed Road Permit (CRP) issued by the Hong Kong Transport Department. Quotas are tightly controlled and chronically scarce, granted mainly to Hong Kong people or businesses that invest, pay tax or meet specific conditions in Guangdong; ordinary tourists cannot apply on a temporary basis. The "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" scheme from 2023 eased some limits, but it only covers Hong Kong private cars travelling to and from Guangdong via the HZMB, and does not cover a mainland resident's cross-border trip starting from Zhaoqing.

An ordinary mainland or Hong Kong car, without dual plates or the relevant permits, cannot legally cross the border freely. That is exactly why a "licensed cross-border MPV plus professional driver" is the mainstream choice for point-to-point transfers between Zhaoqing and Hong Kong.

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Which port is fastest for a Zhaoqing to Hong Kong charter?
In most cases Shenzhen Bay is smoothest: from Zhaoqing you head east via the Guangzhou–Shenzhen corridor, and Shenzhen Bay's co-location clears both sides in one stop, after which the Shenzhen Bay Bridge and Tsing Ma corridor lead straight to the Hong Kong urban area and airport. For late nights or early flights, choose the 24-hour Huanggang port. To stay on the west bank and avoid Shenzhen, cross via the HZMB Zhuhai port.
Can I just drive my own mainland-plate car to Hong Kong?
No. An ordinary mainland plate cannot enter Hong Kong freely. Cross-border driving requires a "dual-plate" vehicle (Yue-Z plate + Hong Kong plate) with a Guangdong regular quota and a Hong Kong Closed Road Permit. Quotas are scarce and issued to specific holders, so ordinary travellers cannot apply temporarily — which is why a qualified licensed cross-border charter is the practical choice.
Does "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" work for a Zhaoqing to Hong Kong trip?
Not for a mainland resident's needs. The scheme (from 1 July 2023) only lets eligible Hong Kong private cars travel to and from Guangdong via the HZMB without a quota — it is the "Hong Kong car into the mainland" direction. To take you from Zhaoqing straight to Hong Kong, you still need a dual-plate cross-border charter.
Roughly how long does Zhaoqing to Hong Kong take?
Combining driving and clearance, it is about 4–5.5 hours to the Hong Kong urban area via Shenzhen Bay, about 4–5 hours to the airport, and about 3.5–5 hours via the HZMB. These are estimates and depend on port queues, holiday traffic and weather.
Does everyone have to get out for inspection at the border?
It depends on the port. Shenzhen Bay and Huanggang use co-location, usually clearing both sides in a single stop, which is relatively simple; the HZMB uses three-place inspection. In all cases, every passenger must present their own valid documents for inspection, and children also need their own documents.
How much does a cross-border charter cost?
It is an estimated range: Zhaoqing is further from Hong Kong than Shenzhen or Zhongshan, so a 7-seat MPV is about HK$2,200–3,500 one way, with premium vehicles, return trips or full-day hire costing more. The final price is confirmed at booking based on vehicle type, port and route.
What documents do I need?
Mainland residents need an Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) with a valid endorsement (individual G / group L / business, etc.); Hong Kong and Macao residents can use a Home Return Permit. Foreign nationals need a valid passport meeting Hong Kong entry arrangements, plus a valid Chinese visa if the trip involves a mainland stay. Check the latest notices from the National Immigration Administration and the Hong Kong Immigration Department before travelling.
