01 — Overview

Want to rent a car and drive to Hong Kong?The barrier is the licence plate, not your driving

Many people assume that renting a car in Zhaoqing and sorting out an Exit-Entry Permit is enough to drive across to Hong Kong. It isn't. Only a handful of land ports allow vehicles through, and the real barrier is the plate: an ordinary mainland rental car has no "dual licence plates", so by law it cannot be driven freely into Hong Kong, and tourists cannot obtain a quota on a short-term basis. In short, what stops you is the vehicle's eligibility, not your driving skills.

02 — Ports

Even with a compliant vehicle, only a few ports take cars

Zhaoqing sits on the west bank of the Pearl River, so you can head east via the Shenzhen-side ports or south across the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge from the Zhuhai port. Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line carry only rail and pedestrians — no vehicles. For late nights or red-eye flights, choose the 24-hour Huanggang or HZMB ports.

Note: Shenzhen Bay and Huanggang use "co-location" clearance, completing both sides' checks once on the mainland side; HZMB uses separate three-place clearance. Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (Futian) carry only rail and pedestrians, no vehicles. The advantage of a licensed cross-border van is one car and one driver the whole way. You don't worry about rental cross-border compliance — you just complete the immigration checks at the port.

05 — Why not self-drive

Why a car rented in Zhaoqing can't be driven into Hong Kong

For cross-border driving, both the vehicle and the driver must be approved in advance. An ordinary mainland car (including a rental) entering Hong Kong needs "dual licence plates" (a Guangdong "Yue Z" plate plus a Hong Kong plate), together with a regular Guangdong quota and a Closed Road Permit (CRP) issued by the HK Transport Department. Regular quotas are tightly controlled and chronically scarce, issued mainly to Hong Kong residents or firms investing or paying tax in Guangdong; tourists cannot apply on a short-term basis, and rental companies will not hand a licensed vehicle to a tourist for self-drive crossing. The "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" scheme (from July 2023) eased some limits, but it applies only to Hong Kong private cars heading north into Guangdong via the HZMB with a booked quota — it does not serve a mainland resident driving from Zhaoqing to Hong Kong.

The conclusion is straightforward: renting an ordinary car in Zhaoqing to self-drive into Hong Kong is not legally feasible. This is exactly why a "licensed cross-border van + professional driver" is the mainstream choice for point-to-point Zhaoqing–Hong Kong transfers.

Before you set off, the questions we hear most

Can I rent a car in Zhaoqing and drive it to Hong Kong myself?
No. An ordinary mainland rental has no "dual licence plates" (Yue Z plate + Hong Kong plate), so by law it cannot be driven freely into Hong Kong. Cross-border quotas are scarce and issued to specific applicants; tourists cannot obtain them on a short-term basis, and rental companies will not provide a licensed vehicle for tourist self-drive crossing. The practical choice is a licensed cross-border charter.
Does "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" apply to a Zhaoqing–Hong Kong trip?
Not for a mainland resident's needs. The scheme (from July 2023) only lets eligible Hong Kong private cars travel to and from Guangdong via the HZMB without a regular quota — it's the "HK car into the mainland" direction. To take people from Zhaoqing straight into Hong Kong, you still need a dual-plate cross-border charter.
Which port is fastest for a Zhaoqing–Hong Kong charter?
Shenzhen Bay is usually smoothest: drive east toward Shenzhen, clear both sides once at Shenzhen Bay's co-location, then take the Shenzhen Bay Bridge and Route 8 straight to the HK urban area or airport. For late nights or early flights, the 24-hour Huanggang works; to stay on the west bank and avoid Shenzhen, cross via the HZMB Zhuhai port.
How long does Zhaoqing to Hong Kong take?
Combining driving and clearance, it's roughly 4–5.5 hours to the HK urban area via Shenzhen Bay, 4–5 hours to the airport, and about 3.5–5 hours via the HZMB. All are estimates and depend on port queues, holiday traffic and weather.
Does everyone get out for checks at the port?
It depends on the port. Shenzhen Bay and Huanggang use co-location, usually clearing both sides in one stop with a relatively simple flow; the HZMB uses three-place clearance. Either way, every passenger must present valid personal documents, and children need their own documents too.
What documents do mainland residents need for Hong Kong?
An Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao with a valid endorsement (individual G / group L / business, etc.); Hong Kong/Macao residents can use a Home Return Permit. Foreign travellers use a valid passport with visa-free or visa arrangements by nationality, plus a China visa if the trip involves a mainland stay. Always confirm against the latest National Immigration Administration and HK Immigration Department notices.
How much does a cross-border charter cost?
It's an estimated range: Zhaoqing is farther from Hong Kong than Shenzhen or Zhongshan, so a 7-seat van runs about HK$2,200–3,500 one-way, with premium vehicles, round trips or full-day hire costing more. The final price is confirmed at booking by vehicle type, port and route.
