01 — Overview

Renting a car from Jiangmen to Hong Kong, why it isn't that simple

Plenty of Jiangmen travellers picture renting a car and self-driving across to Hong Kong, but the cross-boundary bar is far higher than the rental itself. Jiangmen sits on the west bank of the Pearl River and has no cross-boundary checkpoint of its own — vehicles must first take the expressway to Zhuhai, then cross via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB). More importantly, an ordinary mainland rental car has no cross-boundary eligibility and cannot freely enter Hong Kong. You need a licensed vehicle holding both a Hong Kong "Closed Road Permit" and the matching mainland dual plate (Yue Z) — and those quotas are issued by ballot and extremely scarce.

We've run Hong Kong–Macao cross-boundary charters for ten years, with 30+ self-owned licensed vans and 50,000+ customers served. Below we lay out the real conditions for driving across, how to choose a port, how long it takes, and why a licensed charter is the more practical choice.

02 — Ports

Which port to cross from Jiangmen — know them first

Jiangmen has no cross-boundary checkpoint of its own. The most direct route is by expressway to Zhuhai and across the HZMB (24-hour clearance, three-place three-check); alternatively via the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link into Shenzhen, then across at Shenzhen Bay, Huanggang and others. Either way, the crossing vehicle must be a licensed cross-boundary car.

Jiangmen to Hong Kong cross-boundary ports: HZMB 24h three-place three-check, Shenzhen Bay co-location, Huanggang/Lok Ma Chau 24h, Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai 07:00-22:00

Note: HZMB uses "three-place, three-check" — Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao each run separate checkpoints. From Jiangmen districts you take the expressway to the Zhuhai port, then the ~42 km bridge-tunnel to the Hong Kong port (next to Hong Kong International Airport). Shenzhen Bay uses co-location ("two checks in one place"), clearing both sides in a single building. Opening hours and vehicle access follow the HKSAR control-point pages (see sources below).

03 — Indicative fares

Jiangmen → Hong Kong licensed charter, indicative fares

Below are single-trip indicative fares for a 7-seat van (Alphard / V-Class). Jiangmen is farther from Hong Kong than Zhongshan and must reach the HZMB via the west bank, so fares run higher. Actual quotes depend on pickup area, destination, timing and port, and include driver, tolls and port transfer; final confirmation applies.

Jiangmen to Hong Kong indicative fares: Tsim Sha Tsui/Central from HK$1800, HK Airport from HK$1800, Disneyland from HK$2000

Travel times are experience-based estimates including clearance and vary widely with port queues, traffic and timing; 7-seat vans, holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings usually cost more. For a 23-seat Coaster, round trips or full-day hire, ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance flow

One van throughout, how clearance works

The benefit of a licensed cross-boundary van is one car and one driver the whole way — you simply complete immigration checks at the port, with no worries over self-drive eligibility or quotas.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
Driver meets you at your Jiangmen address at the agreed time and loads luggage
  • STEP 2 · To the bridge
Take the Jiangzhu / Western Coastal expressway to Zhuhai for mainland exit checks
  • STEP 3 · Cross
Cross the ~42 km HZMB bridge-tunnel to the Hong Kong port for entry
  • STEP 4 · Direct drop-off
After clearance, the same van goes straight to your Hong Kong destination — no transfers

05 — Why not self-drive

Can you rent and drive yourself from Jiangmen to Hong Kong?

Generally no. Ordinary mainland vehicles (including rentals) have no right to enter Hong Kong freely. A legally cross-boundary private car must hold both Hong Kong's Closed Road Permit and the matching mainland dual plate (Yue Z). These quotas are extremely scarce, issued by ballot / batch and skewed toward firms with substantial mainland investment — the HK Transport Department's 10th batch (Nov 2025) offered only ~600 HK quotas, and the 11th batch (Jul 2026) about 900 new plus 500 reopened. The "Northbound Travel for HK Vehicles" scheme (since 2023) only lets eligible Hong Kong private cars head north into Guangdong via the bridge (HK → mainland), not the reverse; "Southbound" applications for urban entry opened only in December 2025 and remain quota-limited.

For the vast majority of travellers leaving from Jiangmen, hiring a licensed cross-boundary charter that already holds the Closed Road Permit and Yue Z plate is the most practical, legal and ballot-free option.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Does Jiangmen have a direct cross-boundary port to Hong Kong? Which port should the car use?
Jiangmen has no cross-boundary port of its own. The most direct route from Jiangmen is by expressway to Zhuhai and across the HZMB (24-hour clearance, three-place three-check) into Hong Kong; alternatively via the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link to Shenzhen, then crossing at Shenzhen Bay / Huanggang. Either way, the crossing vehicle must be a licensed cross-boundary car.
Can I rent a car and drive myself from Jiangmen to Hong Kong?
Generally no. Ordinary mainland vehicles (including rentals) have no right to enter Hong Kong freely. You'd need Hong Kong's Closed Road Permit plus a mainland dual plate (Yue Z), and quotas are issued by ballot and extremely scarce; "Southbound" places are also very limited. For most travellers, hiring a licensed cross-boundary charter is the ballot-free, legal and hassle-free option.
How long does Jiangmen to Hong Kong take?
Including clearance: about 3.5–5 hours to Tsim Sha Tsui / Central, about 2.5–3.5 hours to Hong Kong International Airport (the bridge's HK port is next to the airport), and about 3–4 hours to Disneyland. Actual times depend on port queues and traffic, and are longer on holidays.
Is the HZMB open 24 hours?
Yes. The HZMB Hong Kong Port has offered 24-hour clearance since 24 October 2018, using "three-place, three-check" with Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao each conducting their own checks.
What documents do mainland residents need for Hong Kong?
An Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) with a valid Hong Kong endorsement (individual / group / business, etc.). On a licensed cross-boundary car you simply clear immigration at the port as normal.
Can foreigners ride a Jiangmen-to-Hong Kong cross-boundary charter?
Yes. Foreign passengers need a valid passport plus a Hong Kong visa, or to qualify for visa-free entry (most nationalities are visa-free — verify for your own nationality); they clear immigration at the port as normal.
Does "Northbound Travel for HK Vehicles" let me drive my car from Jiangmen into Hong Kong?
No. "Northbound Travel" (since July 2023) lets eligible Hong Kong private cars head north into Guangdong via the HZMB (HK → mainland); it does not address getting a Jiangmen car into Hong Kong. For Jiangmen cars heading south, you'd rely on the quota-limited "Southbound" scheme, or choose a licensed charter.
