01 — Overview

From Jiangmen to Hong Kong, one car all the way is the easiest way

Jiangmen sits on the west bank of the Pearl River and has no border crossing of its own. To reach Hong Kong, you first take the expressway to Zhuhai, then cross the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Only a handful of land routes can carry vehicles, and ordinary mainland or Hong Kong cars cannot simply drive across the boundary. For most people, the easiest approach is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver, taking you from your Jiangmen address straight to your Hong Kong destination, clearing immigration only at the port, with no vehicle change and no luggage transfers.

We have run cross-border charters to Hong Kong and Macao for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs serving more than 50,000 customers. Below we explain how to choose a port, how long the drive takes, how clearance works, and why self-driving is so hard.

02 — Ports

Know the vehicle-capable crossings before you choose

Jiangmen lies on the Pearl River's west bank. The most direct vehicle route to Hong Kong runs through Zhuhai onto the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (open 24 hours, three places three checks). You can also go east via the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link to Shenzhen and cross at vehicle-capable ports such as Shenzhen Bay or Huanggang. On every route, the vehicle itself must be a licensed cross-border car.

Jiangmen-Hong Kong crossings: HZMB 24h three checks, Shenzhen Bay co-location, Huanggang 24h, Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai 07:00-22:00

Note: the HZMB uses "three places, three checks" — Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao each run separate ports. From Jiangmen districts you take the expressway to the Zhuhai port, then cross roughly 42 km of bridge and tunnel to the Hong Kong port (right next to Hong Kong International Airport). Shenzhen Bay uses co-location clearance, completing both sides' checks in one building on the Shenzhen side. Opening hours and vehicle eligibility follow the official HK control-point pages (see sources below).

03 — Reference Prices

Jiangmen → Hong Kong common route reference prices

The figures below are one-way reference prices for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class). Actual quotes depend on pickup area, destination, time and port, and include driver, tolls and port handling; final confirmation applies. Jiangmen is farther from Hong Kong than Zhongshan and must reach the HZMB along the west bank, so prices run higher.

Jiangmen to Hong Kong reference prices: Tsim Sha Tsui/Central from HK$1800, HK Airport from HK$1800, Disneyland from HK$2000

Drive times are experience-based estimates including clearance and vary widely with port queues, traffic and timing; peaks, holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings usually take longer. For a 23-seat Coaster group vehicle or round-trip / full-day hire, ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance

One car all the way, how clearance works

The advantage of a licensed cross-border MPV is one vehicle and one driver throughout. All you do is complete immigration checks at the port.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
Driver arrives at your Jiangmen pickup address at the agreed time and loads luggage
  • STEP 2 · Onto the bridge
Take the expressway to the Zhuhai port, clear mainland exit, then drive onto the HZMB
  • STEP 3 · Entry
Clear Hong Kong entry at the bridge's HK port (next to Hong Kong International Airport)
  • STEP 4 · Direct drop-off
After clearance, the same car continues straight to your Hong Kong destination, no change, no transfer

05 — Why Charter

Why can't you just drive yourself to Hong Kong?

For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. A legally cross-border private car must hold both a Hong Kong Transport Department Closed Road Permit and a mainland dual-plate (Guangdong "Yue Z"). These quotas are extremely scarce and issued by ballot or in batches — the Transport Department's 10th batch in November 2025 offered only about 600 Hong Kong quotas. The "Northbound Travel for HK Vehicles" scheme (since 2023) only lets eligible Hong Kong cars head north into Guangdong via the bridge (HK→mainland); "Southbound Travel" for Guangdong cars only began accepting urban-entry applications in December 2025, also with limited quotas. None of these let a Jiangmen resident drive their own car straight into urban Hong Kong.

For the vast majority of travellers leaving from Jiangmen, hiring a licensed cross-border charter that already holds the Closed Road Permit and Yue Z plate is the most practical, legal and ballot-free option available today.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Does Jiangmen have a direct border crossing to Hong Kong? Which port does the car use?
Jiangmen has no border crossing of its own. The most direct option is to take the expressway to Zhuhai and cross the HZMB (open 24 hours, three places three checks) into Hong Kong; you can also go via the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link to Shenzhen and cross at Shenzhen Bay / Huanggang. On every route, the vehicle must be a licensed cross-border car.
Can I drive my own car from Jiangmen to Hong Kong?
Generally no. Ordinary mainland cars have no right to enter Hong Kong freely; they must hold a Hong Kong Closed Road Permit plus a mainland dual-plate (Yue Z), and quotas are issued by ballot and are extremely scarce; "Southbound Travel" places are also very limited. For most travellers, hiring a licensed cross-border charter is the ballot-free, legal and hassle-free choice.
How long does Jiangmen to Hong Kong take?
Estimates including clearance: about 3.5–5 hours to Tsim Sha Tsui / Central, about 2.5–3.5 hours to Hong Kong International Airport (the bridge's HK port is next to the airport), about 3–4 hours to Disneyland. Actual times depend on port queues and traffic, and run longer on holidays.
Is the HZMB open 24 hours?
Yes. The HZMB Hong Kong port has offered 24-hour clearance since 24 October 2018, using "three places, three checks" with Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao each conducting their own inspections.
What documents do mainland residents need for Hong Kong?
An Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) with a valid Hong Kong endorsement (individual / group / business, etc.). On a licensed cross-border car you simply clear normal immigration at the port.
Can foreigners take the Jiangmen to Hong Kong cross-border charter?
Yes. Foreign passengers need a valid passport plus a Hong Kong visa, or eligibility for visa-free entry to Hong Kong (most nationalities qualify, check for your own nationality); you clear normal immigration at the port.
Can "Northbound Travel for HK Vehicles" let me drive my car from Jiangmen into Hong Kong?
No. "Northbound Travel" (since 1 July 2023) lets eligible Hong Kong private cars head north into Guangdong via the HZMB — the direction is HK→mainland; it does not solve getting a Jiangmen car into Hong Kong. For a Jiangmen car going south, you depend on the limited "Southbound Travel" quotas or choose a licensed charter.
