Which port works best from Huizhou into Hong Kong

Most Shenzhen–HK crossings carry only rail or pedestrians; only a few actually allow vehicles, and for Huizhou (eastern Guangdong) the nearest and smoothest is the Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai port at the easternmost end of the border, linked directly to Huizhou's districts via the Huiyan Expressway, while red-eye flights or round-the-clock needs go through the 24-hour Huanggang/Lok Ma Chau, Shenzhen Bay is also popular thanks to its "co-location" clearance, and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge on the western Pearl River estuary is a major detour for Huizhou — normally skipped and mainly serving the "HK cars northbound" scheme and the Zhuhai/Macau direction — so the licensed driver picks the port by live traffic and queue conditions.

Why a Huizhou rental can't drive into Hong Kong

For cross-border driving, both car and driver must be approved first. The vehicle needs a Guangdong–HK dual plate (mainland Yue-Z plate + Hong Kong Closed Road Permit, CRP), the driver needs licences recognised on both sides, plus Hong Kong third-party insurance and mainland compulsory insurance — and dual-plate quotas have long been highly scarce, with new private/business allocations historically tied to a company's Guangdong investment, tax or donations, making them nearly impossible for individuals. The "HK cars northbound" scheme (from mid-2023) eased northbound entry for Hong Kong private cars, but only via the HZMB into Guangdong and only for HK-plated, self-driven vehicles — over 140,000 cars have joined per the Transport and Logistics Bureau's 2026 Legislative Council remarks — and it does nothing for "moving people to and from downtown Hong Kong out of Huizhou". So an ordinary single-plate rental simply cannot drive into Hong Kong, which is why a licensed cross-border charter is the practical, compliant choice.
