01 — Overview

From Guangzhou to Hong Kong, the easiest way is one car all the way

Guangzhou and Hong Kong both sit within the Greater Bay Area and aren't far apart as the crow flies — but "driving across" isn't simple. The land crossings that allow vehicles are concentrated on the Shenzhen side, ordinary mainland or Hong Kong cars can't cross the boundary freely, and Guangzhou itself is still some distance from those crossings. For most people, the easiest option is a licensed cross-boundary MPV with a professional driver, taking you from your Guangzhou pickup address straight to your Hong Kong destination, with border checks the only stop along the way — no changing vehicles, no dragging luggage to transfer.

We've run Hong Kong and Macau cross-boundary charters for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs and 50,000+ customers served. Below we lay it all out: how to choose a crossing, how long the drive takes, how clearance works, and why self-driving is so hard.

02 — Crossings

Vehicle crossings are concentrated on the Shenzhen side — know them before you choose

A Guangzhou–Hong Kong cross-boundary car usually takes the expressway to a vehicle-cleared crossing on the Shenzhen side before entering Hong Kong. Most crossings carry only rail or pedestrians (such as Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line); the ones that genuinely allow vehicles are below. For late nights and red-eye flights, prioritise the 24-hour Huanggang or HZMB.

Guangzhou to Hong Kong vehicle crossings guide: Huanggang/Lok Ma Chau 24h, Shenzhen Bay approx 06:00-24:00 co-location, Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai 07:00-22:00, HZMB 24h

Note: Lo Wu and Futian (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line) carry only rail and pedestrians — no vehicles. Shenzhen Bay uses "co-location" clearance, where both mainland and Hong Kong checks are completed in one facility on the Shenzhen side, with no shuttle transfer between the two sides; Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau is the only land crossing between Shenzhen and Hong Kong that operates 24 hours; the HZMB uses "three-place, three-check" clearance and also runs 24 hours. Opening hours and vehicle eligibility are subject to the official control-point pages (see sources at the end).

03 — Reference Prices

Guangzhou → Hong Kong reference prices for common routes

The figures below are one-way reference prices for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class). Actual quotes depend on pickup district, destination, time slot and crossing, and include driver, tolls and border transfer; final confirmation applies. Guangzhou is farther from the crossings than Shenzhen, so prices are higher overall than departures from Shenzhen.

Guangzhou to Hong Kong reference prices: TST/Central from HK$1300, HKG airport from HK$1600, Disneyland from HK$1400, Nansha/Panyu from HK$1300

Drive times are experience-based estimates including clearance and are heavily affected by border queues, traffic and time of day; peak periods, public holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings are usually longer. For a 23-seat Coaster group vehicle, round trips or full-day charters, ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance

One car all the way, here's how clearance works

The advantage of a licensed cross-boundary MPV is one car and one driver the whole way — all you do is complete the immigration checks at the crossing.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
Your driver arrives at your Guangzhou pickup address at the agreed time to collect you and your luggage
  • STEP 2 · Exit
Drive via expressway to a Shenzhen-side crossing for mainland exit checks
  • STEP 3 · Entry
Shenzhen Bay co-location clears in one go in the same building; Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau handle Hong Kong entry per current arrangements
  • STEP 4 · Direct
After clearance, the same car drives straight to your Hong Kong destination — no vehicle change, no transfer

05 — Why charter

Why can't you just drive to Hong Kong yourself?

To drive across the boundary, both the vehicle and the driver must be approved first. Ordinary mainland or Hong Kong private cars cannot cross freely; they need a Guangdong–Hong Kong dual licence plate (the so-called "dual plate", a black "Yue Z" plate on the mainland side), a regular cross-boundary quota issued by Hong Kong's Transport Department, and the corresponding approval from mainland public-security traffic authorities. Regular quotas have long been scarce and hard to get, typically requiring substantial investment or tax contributions on the mainland, so ordinary travellers can almost never apply on their own. "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" only allows eligible Hong Kong private cars to enter Guangdong via the HZMB for the owner's own use — carrying passengers for reward is not allowed; the Shenzhen Bay temporary quota opens weekly with limited slots — none of these solve the need to ride straight from central Guangzhou to central Hong Kong.

This is exactly why "licensed cross-boundary MPV + professional driver" is the mainstream option for point-to-point transfers across Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong: a dual-plate vehicle and a qualified driver carry you, so you never have to deal with vehicle quotas yourself.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Can I drive myself from Guangzhou to Hong Kong?
Generally no. Ordinary mainland or Hong Kong private cars can't cross the boundary freely; they need a Guangdong–Hong Kong dual plate plus a regular quota from Hong Kong's Transport Department and mainland approval, and quotas are scarce with high thresholds. Most travellers choose a dual-plate cross-boundary charter, carried by a qualified vehicle and driver.
Which crossing does a Guangzhou–Hong Kong cross-boundary car use?
Depending on destination and traffic, common choices are Shenzhen Bay, Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau and Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai among the Shenzhen–Hong Kong land crossings; Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau is the only 24-hour land crossing. If connecting via the western shore of the Pearl River estuary, the HZMB (the bridge used by "Northbound Travel") is also an option.
Can "Northbound Travel" be used to carry passengers from Guangzhou to Hong Kong?
No, not for reward. Northbound Travel is limited to eligible Hong Kong private cars for the owner's own use entering and leaving Guangdong via the HZMB, with no more than 30 days per stay on the mainland and no more than 180 days in total per year. For business or leisure transfers carrying passengers, choose a dual-plate cross-boundary charter.
How long does a Guangzhou–Hong Kong cross-boundary charter take?
Including clearance and depending on traffic, central Guangzhou to central Hong Kong is about 2.5–3.5 hours, and to Hong Kong International Airport about 3–4 hours; departures from Nansha / Panyu can be shorter. These are estimates — holidays and peak clearance times will lengthen them significantly.
What documents do mainland residents need to ride a cross-boundary car to Hong Kong?
A valid Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) with a valid endorsement for Hong Kong (individual "G", group "L", business endorsement, etc.). Foreign travellers carry a valid passport and enjoy visa-free entry by nationality or arrange a Hong Kong visa (competent authority: National Immigration Administration).
How much does a Guangzhou–Hong Kong cross-boundary charter cost?
By distance, roughly from HKD 1,300–2,200 one-way for a 7-seat MPV. Shenzhen starts near HK$700 and farther Zhongshan is HK$1,700+, with Guangzhou in between. Actual prices vary with vehicle type, destination, crossing and traffic — for reference only.
How do clearance modes differ at Shenzhen Bay, Huanggang and the HZMB?
Shenzhen Bay uses "co-location" (both sides' checks completed in one facility on the Shenzhen side); Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau traditionally uses separate checks on each side and runs 24 hours; the HZMB uses "three-place, three-check" (Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao each check separately) and also runs 24 hours.
