01 — Overview

From Foshan to Hong Kong, one car all the way is the easiest option

Foshan sits in the western Pearl River Delta and has no direct land vehicle port to Hong Kong. You either go via Shenzhen's vehicle-eligible ports, or via Zhuhai across the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge. The catch: ordinary Mainland or Hong Kong cars cannot cross the boundary freely, and only a handful of ports legally allow vehicles through. For most travellers the easiest approach is a licensed cross-boundary MPV with a professional driver, taking you from your Foshan pickup address straight to your Hong Kong destination, with only border clearance in between. No changing vehicles, no dragging luggage.

We have run Hong Kong and Macao cross-boundary charters for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs and over 50,000 customers served. Below we lay out which port to use from Foshan, how long the journey takes, how clearance works, and why self-driving is so difficult.

02 — Ports

The vehicle-eligible ports for Foshan to Hong Kong

Foshan is in the western Pearl River Delta. Via Shenzhen, the most common port is Shenzhen Bay (co-location). For overnight, pre-dawn or red-eye crossings, use the 24-hour Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau vehicle channel. Via Zhuhai, the 24-hour HZM Bridge is an option.

Foshan cross-boundary port guide: Shenzhen Bay 06:30-24:00 co-location, HZM Bridge 24h three-place clearance, Huanggang/Lok Ma Chau 24h, Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai 07:00-22:00

Note: Shenzhen Bay uses "co-location" clearance, where both Mainland and Hong Kong checks are completed once inside a single building on the Shenzhen side, with no shuttle transfer between the two sides. It is the most common vehicle port for western Pearl River Delta cities like Foshan via Shenzhen. The HZM Bridge uses "three-place clearance," with Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao each running their own checkpoint, making it the backup route on the west side. Opening hours and vehicle eligibility are subject to official announcements (see sources at the end).

03 — Reference Fares

Foshan → Hong Kong reference fares for common routes

The figures below are one-way reference fares for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class). Actual quotes depend on the pickup district, destination, time slot and port, and include driver, tolls and border transfer; the final confirmation applies. Foshan is farther from Hong Kong than Shenzhen, so Nanhai / Chancheng / Shunde near the city are relatively lower, while western areas like Gaoming / Sanshui, holidays and overnight runs are usually higher.

Foshan to Hong Kong reference fares: Nanhai/Chancheng to Tsim Sha Tsui from HK$1500, to airport from HK$1700, Shunde to Disneyland from HK$1600, Gaoming/Sanshui to Central from HK$2000

Travel times are experience-based estimates including clearance and are heavily affected by port queues, traffic and time of day; peak periods, holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings usually take longer. 04 — Clearance

One car all the way,how clearance works

The benefit of a licensed cross-boundary MPV is one car and one driver for the whole trip. All you do is complete the immigration checks at the border.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
The driver arrives at your Foshan pickup address at the agreed time to collect you and your luggage
  • STEP 2 · Exit
Drive to the port via the expressway and complete Mainland departure checks
  • STEP 3 · Entry
Shenzhen Bay clears both sides once in one building; via the bridge it is "three-place clearance" handled separately
  • STEP 4 · Direct
After clearance, the same car drives straight to your Hong Kong destination, no changing vehicles or transfers

05 — Why Charter

Why can't I just drive from Foshan to Hong Kong?

For cross-boundary driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. The vehicle needs a Guangdong–Hong Kong dual licence plate (commonly the "two-place plate," usually a Yue-Z plate on the Mainland side), a Closed Road Permit (CRP) issued by Hong Kong's Transport Department, and Mainland approval plus a quota to drive across the boundary. Regular quotas have long been scarce with high approval thresholds, so an individual can rarely obtain one for a single trip. A cross-boundary private car carrying passengers for reward must also hold a hire car permit. The "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" scheme launched in 2023 only lets eligible Hong Kong private cars head north into Guangdong via the HZM Bridge for non-commercial personal use. It cannot carry passengers commercially, and it does not solve the need to bring guests from Foshan to Hong Kong.

An ordinary Mainland or Hong Kong car, without a dual plate or the relevant permits, cannot legally cross the boundary freely. That is exactly why a "licensed cross-boundary MPV plus a professional driver" is the mainstream solution for point-to-point Foshan–Hong Kong transfers.

06 — FAQ

Before you go,the questions people ask most

Can I drive myself from Foshan to Hong Kong?
Usually no. An ordinary car cannot cross the boundary without a Guangdong–Hong Kong dual plate and a Hong Kong Closed Road Permit; quotas are scarce and approval thresholds are high. A cross-boundary car carrying passengers for reward must also hold a hire car permit. Most travellers choose a compliant cross-boundary charter with all the right credentials. Source: GovHK "Guangdong–Hong Kong Cross-Boundary Driving," Transport Department.
Can "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" be used to bring guests from Foshan to Hong Kong?
No. The scheme is for eligible Hong Kong private cars heading north into Guangdong via the HZM Bridge for non-commercial personal use (no more than 30 days per entry, 180 days total per year). It cannot carry passengers commercially and does not cover the Foshan-to-Hong Kong direction. Source: HZM Bridge (Hong Kong) official site / Northbound booking system.
Which port does a Foshan-to-Hong Kong charter usually use?
From the western Pearl River Delta (including Foshan), the most common port via Shenzhen is Shenzhen Bay (co-location). For overnight or pre-dawn crossings, use the 24-hour Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau vehicle channel; via Zhuhai, the 24-hour HZM Bridge (three-place clearance) is an option. Source: Immigration Department, Shenzhen Port Office, HZM Bridge official site.
Which ports clear 24 hours?
The HZM Bridge port (round-the-clock since 2018) and the Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau vehicle channel run 24 hours; Shenzhen Bay runs about 06:30–24:00, and Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai passenger clearance about 07:00–22:00 (always per the latest official notices). Source: Immigration Department, Shenzhen Port Office.
How long is the drive from Foshan to the Hong Kong city centre?
Door to door is about 3–4.5 hours (including clearance, depending on traffic and pickup/drop-off points). Nanhai, Chancheng and Shunde near the city are faster; western areas like Gaoming and Sanshui take longer, and holiday port peaks may extend it further. (Estimate)
What documents do Mainland residents need to ride a cross-boundary charter to Hong Kong?
An Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) with a valid endorsement (tourism / business etc.). Foreign travellers use a valid passport plus a Hong Kong visa or visa-free entry per nationality. Documents must be valid and are checked individually per port guidance. Source: Immigration Department, National Immigration Administration.
Do passengers have to get out of the car at the border?
It depends on the port and vehicle: some cross-boundary cars / MPVs enjoy "clear without alighting" or express lanes, while others still require passengers to get out for checks. It depends on the day's port arrangements and the operator's instructions. Allow plenty of time for clearance.
