01 — Overview

From Dongguan to Hong Kong, one car the whole way is the easiest option

Dongguan and Hong Kong are separated by Shenzhen, and "getting across" is not as simple as just driving. Every land crossing that takes vehicles sits on the Shenzhen side, and an ordinary Mainland car without a dual-plate licence cannot cross the boundary freely. For most travellers from Dongguan, the easiest approach is a licensed cross-boundary van with a professional driver that takes you from your Dongguan pickup town straight to your Hong Kong destination — you only clear immigration at the crossing, with no change of vehicle and no luggage transfer.

We have run Hong Kong and Macau cross-boundary charters for ten years, with 30+ owned vans and 50,000+ customers served. Below we lay out which crossing suits each Dongguan town, how long the drive takes, how clearance works, and why self-driving is so hard.

02 — Crossings

Every vehicle crossing is on the Shenzhen side — know them before you choose

A land charter from Dongguan to Hong Kong clears the border through a Shenzhen crossing. Most crossings carry only rail or pedestrians; the ones that actually take vehicles are below. Western towns mostly use Shenzhen Bay, eastern towns run smoother via Liantang, and late-night or red-eye trips favour the 24-hour Huanggang crossing.

Shenzhen-Hong Kong crossings guide: Huanggang/Lok Ma Chau 24h vehicles, Shenzhen Bay 06:30-24:00 co-location, Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai 07:00-22:00, HZMB 24h

Note: Lo Wu and Futian (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line) carry only rail and pedestrians and do not take vehicles. Shenzhen Bay uses "co-location" — both Mainland and Hong Kong checks are completed once inside the Hong Kong Port Area on the Shenzhen side, with no shuttle transfer between the two sides; the new Huanggang crossing will also adopt co-location. Opening hours and vehicle access follow the Hong Kong Government control point pages (see sources at the end).

03 — Indicative fares

Dongguan → Hong Kong indicative fares for popular routes

Below are indicative one-way fares for a 7-seat van (Alphard / V-Class). Actual quotes depend on pickup town, destination, time of day and crossing, and include driver, tolls and border transfer; final confirmation applies. Dongguan sits above Shenzhen departures overall and below farther cities such as Zhongshan.

Dongguan to Hong Kong indicative fares: Humen/Chang'an to downtown from HK$1100, downtown to TST from HK$1300, east to downtown from HK$1300, Disneyland from HK$1500, HK Airport from HK$1700

Drive times are experience-based estimates including clearance, and vary a lot with queues, traffic and time of day; peaks, public holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings usually take longer. For a 23-seat Coaster group vehicle, round trips or full-day hire, ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance

One car all the way, how clearance works

The benefit of a licensed cross-boundary van is one vehicle and one driver throughout — you only need to clear immigration at the crossing.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
The driver arrives at your Dongguan pickup town at the agreed time to collect you and load luggage
  • STEP 2 · Exit
Drive via expressway to the Shenzhen crossing for Mainland exit checks
  • STEP 3 · Entry
At Shenzhen Bay "co-location" both checks are done in one place; at Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau, HK entry follows current arrangements
  • STEP 4 · Direct
After clearance, the same car drives straight to your Hong Kong destination — no change of vehicle, no transfer

05 — Why charter

No dual-plate licence in Dongguan — why you can't just drive to Hong Kong

Cross-boundary driving requires both the vehicle and the driver to be approved in advance. A regular quota (the so-called dual licence plate / Yue-Z plate) must be approved by the Guangdong side on investment / tax conditions, plus a Closed Road Permit (CRP) from the Hong Kong Transport Department — and quotas are scarce, the bar is high, and waiting times are long, so individuals can almost never apply freely; breaching section 52(3) of the Road Traffic Ordinance carries a maximum fine of HK$10,000 and 6 months' imprisonment. The 2023 "Hong Kong vehicles to Guangdong" scheme only lets eligible Hong Kong private cars head north via the HZMB by computer ballot, in the HK→Guangdong direction, and does not meet the needs of Dongguan residents travelling to Hong Kong.

An ordinary Mainland car without a dual-plate licence or the relevant permit cannot legally cross the boundary. That is exactly why a "licensed cross-boundary van + professional driver" has become the mainstream choice for point-to-point Dongguan↔Hong Kong transfers.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

No dual-plate licence in Dongguan — can I drive my own car to Hong Kong?
No. An ordinary Mainland vehicle cannot enter Hong Kong. Self-driving across the boundary requires both a Closed Road Permit from the Hong Kong Transport Department and a Yue-Z dual licence plate, and the dual-plate quota is approved by the Guangdong side on investment / tax conditions — long scarce and hard for individuals to obtain. In practice, choose a licensed cross-boundary charter.
Can the "HK vehicles to Guangdong" scheme let me drive from Dongguan into Hong Kong?
No. The scheme only lets eligible Hong Kong private cars head north to Guangdong via the HZMB (HK→Guangdong) by online computer ballot, with direction and crossing both restricted; it cannot be used by Dongguan residents to reach Hong Kong. The reverse "Guangdong vehicles southbound" scheme is still being rolled out steadily.
Which crossing is fastest from Dongguan to Hong Kong?
Western towns (Chang'an / Humen / Shatian) mostly use Shenzhen Bay (co-location, efficient); eastern towns (Changping / Tangxia / Fenggang) run smoother via the eastern corridor expressway through Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai; downtown trips heading south often use Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau (24-hour). The driver picks based on the day's traffic.
What documents do passengers need for a cross-boundary charter?
Mainland residents need an EEP (Exit-Entry Permit for Hong Kong and Macao) with a valid endorsement; foreign / HK-Macau-Taiwan travellers need a valid passport with a Hong Kong visa, or a Home Return Permit / Taiwan permit; children also need their own documents. Vehicle credentials (permit, dual plate) are handled by the charter company; passengers just bring their personal travel documents.
Are the crossings open 24 hours?
The Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau vehicle crossing operates 24 hours, and the new Huanggang crossing retains round-the-clock overnight clearance with co-location; Shenzhen Bay runs about 06:30–24:00 (recently extended at times); Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai passenger hours are about 07:00–22:00. Always follow the Immigration Department and Transport Department notices on the day.
How long from Dongguan to the airport / Disneyland?
Estimated about 2.5–3.5 hours (including clearance, depending on pickup town and traffic that day). Allow plenty of time for crossing peaks, especially on public holidays.
What's the difference between "co-location" and "three-place, three-check"?
Shenzhen Bay and the new Huanggang crossing use "co-location" — both sides' checks are completed once at the same place, saving time; the HZMB uses "three-place, three-check" — Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau each have their own checks. Dongguan↔Hong Kong land trips normally use the Shenzhen land crossings rather than the bridge.
