Zhaoqing → Macau · Door-to-Door
Can you rent a car in Zhaoqing and self-drive to Macau?
Know the cross-border rules first, then choose a licensed charter
Thinking of renting a car in Zhaoqing to self-drive into Macau? Ordinary mainland plates can't clear the border. This guide explains dual-plates, Northbound Travel and the quota limits, then gives the practical option: a licensed cross-border van with a professional driver, door to door from your Zhaoqing address to Macau, no permit hassle and a legal crossing.
01 — Overview
Zhaoqing to Macau, self-drive rental barely works
Plenty of people imagine renting a car in Zhaoqing and driving straight to Macau, but crossing the border is nothing like driving within the province. Ordinary mainland plates can't enter Macau freely, and rental-fleet cars have no cross-border eligibility at all. Only two ports let you cross "with both people and vehicle," and even then only for cars on dual-region plates or with special approval. In short, renting locally in Zhaoqing to self-drive into Macau simply isn't viable under current rules.
We've run Hong Kong-Macau cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned vans and 50,000+ customers served. We don't offer self-drive rentals — we provide licensed cross-border vans with professional drivers, door to door. Below we lay out which port to pick, how long the drive takes, why self-driving is so hard, and what the compliant option looks like.

02 — Ports
Only two Zhuhai-Macau ports take vehicles, so know them first
Heading to Macau from Zhaoqing means reaching Zhuhai first, then clearing the border. To cross with both people and vehicle, you can only use the HZMB Zhuhai road port or Hengqin Port, both limited to licensed plates. Gongbei and Qingmao are pedestrian-only checkpoints, suited to dropping passengers at Zhuhai to walk across and connect on the Macau side.

Note: Gongbei and Qingmao are pedestrian-only checkpoints, so vehicles cannot enter Macau through them. Hengqin Port uses the new "joint inspection, one-stop release" model, crossing between Hengqin and Macau's Cotai via the Lotus Bridge, with faster clearance. Opening hours and vehicle access follow the ports' on-site and official notices (see sources at the end).
03 — Reference prices
Zhaoqing → Macau common-route reference prices
Below are one-way reference prices for 7-seat vans (Alphard / V-Class), including driver, tolls and cross-border transfer. Zhaoqing is farther from the Zhuhai-Macau ports than Shenzhen or Zhongshan, so prices run higher. Actual quotes depend on pickup area, destination, timing and whether it's a return trip; final confirmation applies.

| Route | Typical port | Est. drive time | 7-seat ref. (one-way) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zhaoqing city → Zhuhai port (walk-across transfer) | Gongbei / Qingmao | ~2.5–3.5 hrs | From HK$ 1,900 |
| Zhaoqing city → Macau Taipa / Cotai | Hengqin Port | ~3–4 hrs | From HK$ 2,500 |
| Zhaoqing city → Macau Peninsula (St. Paul's / Senado) | Hengqin / HZMB | ~3.5–4.5 hrs | From HK$ 2,400 |
| Zhaoqing city → Venetian / Galaxy | Hengqin Port | ~3–4 hrs | From HK$ 2,500 |
| Zhaoqing Gaoyao / Sihui → main Macau destinations | Hengqin / HZMB | ~3.5–4.5 hrs | From HK$ 2,600 |
Drive times are experience-based estimates including clearance and vary widely with port queues, traffic and timing; holidays and weekends typically take longer. For return trips, full-day charter or HZMB Park-and-Ride options, ask for a separate quote.
04 — Clearance
One vehicle throughout, how clearance works
The advantage of a licensed cross-border van is one car and one driver the whole way — you only need to complete immigration checks at the port.
- STEP 1 · PickupThe driver meets you at your Zhaoqing pickup address at the agreed time and loads luggage
- STEP 2 · To ZhuhaiStraight to the Zhuhai port by expressway, around 2.5–3.5 hours all on motorway
- STEP 3 · CrossingHengqin Port "joint inspection, one stop"; licensed vehicles clear via HZMB / Hengqin
- STEP 4 · DirectDirect to your Macau destination after clearance; at pedestrian ports, walk across then connect on the Macau side
05 — Why charter
Why can't you just rent and drive to Macau?
For cross-border driving, both the vehicle and the driver must be approved first. Ordinary mainland or Hong Kong private cars can't move freely to and from Macau: the vehicle needs a Guangdong-Macau / Guangdong-HK "dual-region plate" (such as a Yue-Z plate), and those quotas are chronically scarce, hard to qualify for (usually tied to corporate investment or tax thresholds) and slow to obtain. Private-car schemes mainly run via the HZMB — "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" lets eligible HK private cars use the bridge without a dual plate, while HK cars to Macau also have a "regular quota" and the bridge port's "Park-and-Ride," each capped per entry and per year. A rental car's ordinary plate in Zhaoqing has neither a dual plate nor a place in these schemes, so even if you rent it, you can't drive it across.
For travelers leaving from Zhaoqing, choosing a licensed charter that already holds a dual plate or compliant cross-border operating credentials is the most practical, compliant option — no permits to arrange yourself, and a legal way to carry passengers across the bridge or border.
