From Shenzhen to Macau, a private car and driver is the easy way

Shenzhen and Macau sit across the Pearl River estuary, with a Zhuhai-side border crossing in between, and an ordinary Shenzhen single-plate car cannot simply drive into urban Macau. For most travellers the easiest option is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver: pickup at your Shenzhen address, a run via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link to the Zhuhai ports, then either a dual-plate through-service or a two-leg relay to your Macau destination, with luggage staying on board the whole way.

02 — Ports

The crossings into Macau: check which ones take cars first

There is no direct land port from Shenzhen into Macau. A cross-border charter runs via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link to Zhuhai and clears at a Zhuhai-side port. Hengqin is drivable and runs 24h with joint inspection and a single release; Gongbei and Qingmao are walk-through ports suited to a two-leg relay; vehicles with a dual plate or bridge quota can enter urban Macau via the HZMB Zhuhai Port.

Note: an ordinary Shenzhen single-plate car cannot freely drive into Macau; only a Macau-plate car, a Guangdong-Macau dual-plate car (Yue Z), or a Hong Kong car holding the HZMB regular quota may enter urban Macau. Gongbei and Qingmao are pure walk-through immigration ports; charters typically drop travellers at the Zhuhai port car park, where they clear on foot and transfer on the Macau side. 05 — Why Charter

Why you can't just drive into Macau

For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. A vehicle entering urban Macau must hold a Macau plate, a Guangdong-Macau dual plate (Yue Z), or qualify under the "Hong Kong private cars to Macau regular quota" via the HZMB. Dual-plate (Yue Z) quotas have long been extremely scarce, private-car issuance is essentially suspended, and applying requires meeting corporate tax or investment thresholds, at high cost over a long lead time. "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" (since mid-2023) only lets Hong Kong private cars enter Guangdong via the bridge and explicitly excludes Macau; "Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles" is the inbound-to-Guangdong direction for Macau-plate cars. None of this solves "ride from Shenzhen city straight to Macau."

An ordinary Shenzhen single-plate car, without a dual plate or bridge quota, legally cannot drive into Macau. That is exactly why a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver, on a two-leg relay or through-service, is the mainstream choice for point-to-point Shenzhen-Macau transfers.

Can a Shenzhen car drive straight into Macau?

In principle, no. An ordinary Shenzhen single-plate car has no Macau entry eligibility; only a Macau-plate car, a Guangdong-Macau dual-plate car (Yue Z), or a Hong Kong car holding the HZMB regular quota may drive into urban Macau. The practical options are a licensed through-charter, or a relay: the Shenzhen car drops you at a Zhuhai port, you clear on foot, and a Macau car picks you up.

Which port is most convenient from Shenzhen to Macau?

Driving or chartering via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link to Zhuhai, the common choices are Hengqin Port (24h, joint inspection with a single release) or Gongbei Port (walk-through, about 06:00–01:00). A through-vehicle with a quota or dual plate can enter urban Macau via the HZMB Zhuhai Port (three-place, three-check).
