Renting a Car in Shenzhen to Drive to Macau
Can You Actually Do It? Here's the Truth
Many travelers want to rent a car in Shenzhen and self-drive into Macau, but an ordinary Shenzhen single-plate car simply cannot enter the city. Here we explain the dual-plate, quota and "HK cars northbound" rules in full, then give you the option that actually works: a licensed relay charter with door-to-door pickup.
01 — Overview
Renting a car in Shenzhen to drive into Macau barely works in reality
Plenty of people search "rent a car in Shenzhen to Macau," but the answer often surprises them: the ordinary single-plate car you can rent in Shenzhen has no right to enter Macau and cannot drive freely into the city. The only vehicles that may legally drive into Macau hold a Macau plate, a Guangdong-HK-Macau dual plate (Yue-Z), or a HK plate that qualifies for the HZMB regular quota — none of which a rental company will hand you. In short, "rent and self-drive across" is not viable for the vast majority of travelers.
We have run Hong Kong and Macau cross-border transfers for ten years, with 30+ owned business vans. Below we explain how to clear the ports, how long it takes, why self-driving is so hard, and the relay-charter option that actually works. We do not offer cross-border self-drive rental — only licensed chauffeur transfers.

02 — Ports
Know which ports take vehicles and which are pedestrian-only first
There is no direct land port between Shenzhen and Macau — you first cross via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link to Zhuhai, then clear into Macau on the Zhuhai side. Very few Zhuhai–Macau ports actually take vehicles, and those all require a quota or dual plate; Gongbei and Qingmao are pedestrian-only. For late nights, choose a 24-hour port.

Note: Gongbei and Qingmao are pedestrian-only immigration ports — no vehicles. The HZMB Zhuhai Port runs 24-hour immigration and takes vehicles, but only HK-plate cars with a bridge quota or dual-plate cars; an ordinary Shenzhen single-plate car cannot drive onto the bridge into Macau. Hengqin Port takes vehicles, mainly serving Macau-cars-northbound and dual-plate vehicles. Opening hours and vehicle access follow official notices (see sources at the end).
03 — Reference Prices
Shenzhen → Macau relay charter reference prices
The figures below are one-way reference prices (HKD) for a 7-seat business van (Alphard / V-Class). Since self-drive rental is not viable, prices are estimated on a relay-charter basis and include driver, tolls and port relay; actual quotes depend on pickup area, group size, one-way vs return and waiting. Final confirmation applies.

| Route | Method / Port | Est. Travel | 7-seat ref. price (one-way) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SZ Nanshan / Bao'an → Zhuhai port | SZ–Zhongshan Link, leg 1 | approx. 90–150 min | from HK$ 1,200 |
| SZ Futian / Luohu → Zhuhai port | SZ–Zhongshan Link + expressway | approx. 120–180 min | from HK$ 1,200 |
| SZ Longgang / Longhua → Zhuhai port | Expressway to SZ–Zhongshan Link | approx. 150–210 min | from HK$ 1,400 |
| Zhuhai port → Macau city / The Venetian | Walk through + Macau-side relay | approx. 30–60 min | from HK$ 2,000 |
| SZ Bao'an → Macau city (through-service) | Dual plate via HZMB | approx. 120–180 min | Enquire (highest) |
Travel times are experience-based ranges including clearance, heavily affected by port queues, traffic and time of day; peaks and holidays usually take longer. Two-leg total = Shenzhen→Zhuhai leg + Macau-side leg. Dual-plate through-service is usually the most expensive due to vehicle scarcity and needs a separate quote.
04 — Clearance Flow
The two-leg relay, how clearance works
Because ordinary vehicles cannot drive straight into Macau, the standard approach is two-leg: a Shenzhen car drops you at a Zhuhai port, you walk through, and a local car continues on the Macau side.
- STEP 1 · PickupThe driver meets you at your Shenzhen pickup address and loads luggage
- STEP 2 · Land legVia the SZ–Zhongshan Link to a Zhuhai port (Hengqin / Gongbei); clear mainland exit
- STEP 3 · CrossWalk through into Macau with your documents; Hengqin's "joint inspection, one-stop clearance" is smoother
- STEP 4 · ContinueA Macau-side car continues straight to your hotel / sights, luggage handled
05 — Why not self-drive
Why renting and self-driving to Macau doesn't work
For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be pre-approved. A car that can enter the Macau city area must carry a Macau plate, a Guangdong-HK-Macau dual plate (Yue-Z), or qualify for the "regular quota for HK private cars to Macau" via the HZMB. Dual-plate quotas have long been extremely scarce, with private-car issuance essentially halted — applying requires corporate tax / investment thresholds, at high cost over a long timeline. "HK cars northbound" (since mid-2023) only lets HK-plate private cars enter Guangdong via the bridge, and explicitly excludes Macau; "Macau cars northbound" lets Macau single-plate cars into Guangdong. None of these are vehicles a Shenzhen rental company can rent you.
An ordinary Shenzhen single-plate car has no right to enter Macau, so renting and self-driving across is simply not allowed by the rules. That is exactly why a "licensed relay charter + professional driver" has become the mainstream option for point-to-point travel from Shenzhen to Macau.
