01 — Overview

From Jiangmen to Macau, a licensed car with a driver is the easy way

Getting from Jiangmen to Macau means first crossing the west bank of the Pearl River to the Zhuhai area, then entering Macau through a checkpoint. The catch: an ordinary Jiangmen mainland car has no Guangdong–Macau dual plate or quota, so it legally cannot drive freely into Macau; and ports like Gongbei and Qingmao handle passengers only, not private-car crossings. For most families and business travellers, the easy option is a licensed cross-border van with a professional driver, picking you up at your Jiangmen address and routing via the HZM Bridge, or using the compliant "passengers cross, car stays" transfer between Zhuhai and Macau.

We have run Hong Kong and Macau cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned vans and 50,000+ customers served. Below we explain which port to choose, how long the drive takes, how clearance works, and why self-driving is so difficult.

02 — Ports

Zhuhai–Macau ports each work differently, so know them first

From Jiangmen you typically take the West Coastal or Jiangzhu Expressway toward the Zhuhai area to transfer. Gongbei and Qingmao are passenger-focused and do not process private-car crossings; the ones that move vehicles are Hengqin (joint inspection) and the HZM Bridge for quota-holding cars. The exact port depends on your charter plan and whether a vehicle swap is needed.

Zhuhai-Macau port guide: HZM Bridge 24h three-place three-check, Gongbei 24h passenger, Hengqin joint inspection 24h, Qingmao pedestrian only

Note: Gongbei and Qingmao are mainly passenger / pedestrian crossings and do not process ordinary private-car crossings. Jiangmen travellers commonly use "passengers cross, car stays" — the mainland car drops you at the port, you walk through immigration, then switch to a Macau-plated vehicle on the other side. Hengqin uses "joint inspection, single release," while the HZM Bridge uses "three-place, three-check" (Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau each inspect separately), unlike Shenzhen's new Huanggang co-location model. Opening hours and crossing rules follow the official pages (see sources at the end).

03 — Reference Prices

Jiangmen → Macau common route reference prices

Below are one-way reference prices for a 7-seat van (Alphard / V-Class). Actual quotes depend on pickup area, destination, time of day, port and whether a two-side vehicle transfer is needed, and include driver and tolls; final confirmation applies. Jiangmen is farther than Zhongshan (from about HK$1,700), so prices are usually higher.

Jiangmen to Macau reference prices: Macau Peninsula from HK$1800, Cotai Venetian from HK$1900, HZM Bridge direct from HK$2200, Taishan Kaiping from HK$2400

Times are estimated ranges including clearance and a two-side vehicle transfer, and vary a lot with port queues, traffic and time of day; peaks, public holidays and weekends are usually longer. For a 23-seat Coaster, round trips, full-day or overnight charters, ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance

Door-to-door, how clearance works

The benefit of a licensed cross-border van is that someone handles the vehicle and routing end to end; you just complete immigration at the port. When no quota applies, a compliant transfer is used and staff help move your luggage.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
The driver arrives at your Jiangmen address at the agreed time and loads luggage
  • STEP 2 · To the port
Via Jiangzhu / West Coastal Expressway to a Zhuhai port for mainland exit checks
  • STEP 3 · Crossing
Quota cars use the HZM Bridge three-place, three-check; otherwise "passengers cross, car stays," walking through and switching to a Macau-plated car
  • STEP 4 · Drop-off
After clearance, direct delivery to your Macau Peninsula / Cotai hotel or port

05 — Why Charter

Why can't you just drive your own car to Macau?

For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. An ordinary Jiangmen mainland car entering Macau needs a "Guangdong–Macau dual plate" (the so-called Yue-Z plate) plus a Macau-side quota — and that quota is chronically scarce, mainly for investors in Macau or specific eligible parties, so ordinary owners essentially cannot get one. On the Hong Kong side, private cars holding a "regular quota" can travel to and from Macau via the HZM Bridge; the "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" scheme (now at its 82nd draw) only lets Hong Kong private cars enter Guangdong via the bridge, by computer ballot with a daily cap — none of which solves a Jiangmen mainland car driving straight into Macau.

An ordinary mainland or Hong Kong car, without a dual plate or the matching quota, cannot legally cross freely into Macau. That is exactly why a "licensed cross-border van + professional driver," together with a compliant "passengers cross, car stays" transfer, is the mainstream way to do point-to-point Jiangmen–Macau transfers.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Can an ordinary Jiangmen car without a dual plate drive straight into Macau?
No. A mainland car entering Macau needs a Guangdong–Macau dual plate (Yue-Z) plus a Macau quota, which is scarce and hard to obtain, so ordinary owners essentially cannot get one. The practical approach is a licensed cross-border charter, or "passengers cross, car stays" — the mainland car drops you at Gongbei / Hengqin, you walk through immigration, then switch to a Macau-plated vehicle on the Macau side.
Which port is most convenient from Jiangmen to Macau?
For passengers, Gongbei, Hengqin or Qingmao (all 24-hour passenger clearance) are common; quota-holding cars can use the HZM Bridge. Hengqin uses co-located inspection and clears faster, while Gongbei is busier but well established for transfers. The exact port follows the charter plan.
Is the HZM Bridge co-location or three-place, three-check?
Three-place, three-check. Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau each set up their own inspection and you clear immigration separately at each; the bridge port has offered 24-hour clearance since 24 October 2018. This differs from the co-location model used at Shenzhen's new Huanggang port.
What documents do mainland residents need for Macau?
A valid Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau (EEP) plus the matching Macau endorsement (e.g. individual-travel G endorsement), with the endorsement valid and enough entries left. Children need their own documents. Foreign nationals travel on a passport and should confirm whether a Macau entry visa is required by nationality.
Can "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" take me from Hong Kong all the way to Macau?
No. The Northbound scheme only allows Hong Kong private cars to enter Guangdong via the HZM Bridge. To reach Macau, a Hong Kong private car needs a separate HZM Bridge "regular quota" to travel to and from Macau; these are different arrangements with different conditions.
Roughly how much is a Jiangmen to Macau charter?
Jiangmen is farther from the Zhuhai ports than Zhongshan, so reference prices are usually higher than Zhongshan (from about HK$1,700). A one-way charter from Jiangmen is typically around HK$1,800–2,600 (HKD, estimated), with farther Taishan / Kaiping higher still; the exact price depends on pickup area, vehicle type, whether it's overnight, and the clearance/transfer method.
How long does Jiangmen to Macau take?
Driving from Jiangmen city to the Zhuhai ports takes about 1.5–2.5 hours (depending on pickup area and traffic, estimated, excluding clearance); add clearance and the Macau-side vehicle swap, and total time usually grows by another 30–60 minutes. Queues are longer at peaks and on public holidays, so allow flexible time.
