Renting a car in Jiangmen to drive to Macau?
Self-drive is blocked — a licensed charter goes door to door
Thinking of renting a car in Jiangmen and self-driving to Macau? Here's the reality: an ordinary mainland car without a Guangdong-Macau dual plate simply cannot enter Macau. We don't offer self-drive rentals. Instead, a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver collects you at your Jiangmen address, runs to the Zhuhai ports, and connects you legally into the Macau Peninsula or Cotai — no dual plates, no quota lottery.
01 — Overview
Jiangmen to Macau:self-drive isn't realistic, a legal transfer is
Many people in Jiangmen first think, "let's just rent a car and drive to Macau." The reality is different: an ordinary Jiangmen-plated mainland car has no Guangdong-Macau dual plate (Yue-Z), so it cannot enter Macau at all. Those dual-plate quotas are scarce and the bar is extremely high, so ordinary car owners essentially cannot obtain one. For most people, "rent a car in Jiangmen and drive straight into Macau" simply isn't viable — which is why this site does not offer self-drive rentals.
Two approaches actually work: first, a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver that collects you at your Jiangmen address and runs to the Zhuhai ports for a legal transfer into Macau; second, "people cross, the car doesn't" — a mainland car drops you at Gongbei or Hengqin, you clear immigration on foot, and switch to a Macau-plated vehicle on the Macau side. We've run Hong Kong and Macau cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs. Below we explain how to pick the port, how long it takes, and why self-driving is so hard.

02 — Ports
From Jiangmen to Macau, transfer via these Zhuhai ports
Jiangmen has no port linking directly to Macau, so you first run via the Western Coastal / Jiangzhu Expressway to Zhuhai and clear there. Passengers usually use Gongbei, Hengqin or Qingmao (passenger clearance all 24h); quota-holding vehicles can use the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which uses three separate checks, unlike Shenzhen's co-location at the new Huanggang port.

Note: Gongbei is mainly for passengers and does not process ordinary private-car crossings, so it suits the "people cross, car doesn't" transfer; Hengqin uses "joint inspection, one-time release" (co-location) and clears faster; Qingmao is pedestrian-only and not for vehicles; the HZMB allows vehicles but only with a valid quota. Opening hours and vehicle-crossing status follow the official pages (see sources at the end).
03 — Reference prices
Jiangmen → Macau common route reference prices
Below are one-way reference prices for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class), including driver, tolls and port transfer. Jiangmen is farther from the Zhuhai ports than Zhongshan, so prices typically run higher; outlying Taishan / Kaiping rise further. Actual quotes depend on pickup area, destination, timing and clearance method, confirmed on booking.

| Route | Typical port | Est. drive time | 7-seat ref. (one-way) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jiangmen Pengjiang / Jianghai → Macau Peninsula (St. Paul's) | Gongbei / Hengqin | ~2–2.5 hrs | From HK$ 1,800 |
| Jiangmen Pengjiang / Jianghai → Cotai (Venetian / Studio City) | Hengqin | ~2.5–3 hrs | From HK$ 1,900 |
| Jiangmen Xinhui → Macau Peninsula | Gongbei / Hengqin | ~2.5–3 hrs | From HK$ 2,000 |
| Jiangmen city → Macau (via HZMB) | HZMB | ~2.5–3 hrs | From HK$ 2,200 |
| Jiangmen Taishan / Kaiping → Macau | Gongbei / Hengqin | ~3–3.5 hrs | From HK$ 2,400 |
Drive times are experience-based estimates excluding clearance; adding immigration and the Macau-side vehicle switch usually adds another ~30–60 minutes, and varies widely with queues, traffic and timing. For a 23-seat Coaster, round trips or full-day charters, ask for a separate quote.
04 — Clearance flow
Legal transfer,how clearance works
A licensed cross-border MPV can run one car through to Macau; under the "people cross, car doesn't" option you switch to a Macau-plated vehicle at the port — the flow is just as clear.
- STEP 1 · PickupThe driver arrives at your Jiangmen address on time to collect passengers and luggage
- STEP 2 · To the portRun via the Jiangzhu / Western Coastal Expressway to the Zhuhai port (Gongbei / Hengqin / HZMB)
- STEP 3 · ClearanceHengqin co-location clears in one stop; licensed vehicles use three separate checks at the HZMB; without a quota, passengers clear on foot and switch cars on the Macau side
- STEP 4 · Drop-offAfter clearance, on to your Macau destination — peninsula sights, Cotai hotels or Macau Airport
05 — Why not self-drive
Why renting a car in Jiangmen to self-drive to Macau won't work
For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. A mainland car entering Macau needs a "Guangdong-Macau dual plate" (Yue-Z) plus a Macau-side quota — long scarce and aimed mainly at investors and specific eligible holders, so ordinary owners essentially cannot get one. On the Hong Kong side, a private car with a "regular quota" may make multiple trips to Macau via the HZMB; meanwhile "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" (now at its 82nd ballot round) only lets Hong Kong private cars enter Guangdong via the bridge — it neither lets a mainland car into Macau nor solves "rent a car in Jiangmen and drive into Macau." Cross-border driving permits and closed-road permits must be approved by the Transport Department and the Guangdong authorities — a high bar with long lead times.
An ordinary Jiangmen-plated mainland car, without a Guangdong-Macau dual plate or matching quota, legally cannot drive into Macau. That's exactly why a "licensed cross-border MPV + professional driver" or a "people cross, car doesn't" legal transfer is the mainstream way from Jiangmen to Macau — this site does not offer self-drive rentals.
