01 — Overview

From Huizhou to Macau, one car all the way is the easiest option

Huizhou to Macau is about 220–250 km. You first take the mainland expressway to Zhuhai, then cross into Macau at a port that allows vehicles — and there are only two of those. Ordinary mainland or Hong Kong cars cannot drive freely into Macau. For most people the easiest way is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver, taking you from your Huizhou pickup address straight to your Macau destination, with only the immigration check at the port in between — no walking across at Gongbei, no dragging luggage onto another vehicle.

We have run Hong Kong and Macau cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs and 50,000+ customers served. Below we explain how to pick the port, how long the trip takes, how clearance works and why self-driving is so hard — all in one place.

02 — Ports

Only two Macau ports take vehicles — know them before you choose

The busiest crossings between Zhuhai and Macau, Gongbei and Qingmao, are pedestrian-only — no vehicles. The ports that actually allow vehicles into Macau are Hengqin Port and the HZMB Zhuhai Highway Port. Both run 24 hours; Hengqin uses "joint inspection, single release" for a one-stop run straight toward Cotai.

Zhuhai-Macau border ports: Hengqin Port 24h joint inspection single release vehicles allowed, HZMB Zhuhai Port 24h vehicles allowed, Gongbei Port 06:00-01:00 pedestrian only, Qingmao Port 24h pedestrian only

Note: Gongbei and Qingmao are passenger-inspection ports — pedestrians only, no vehicles. Hengqin uses "joint inspection, single release" — both sides' checks completed once in the same inspection area, then straight on toward Cotai / Taipa. Ordinary cars still need a Macau entry licence and quota; passengers can be carried by a licensed cross-border vehicle. Opening hours and vehicle eligibility follow official notices (see sources at the end).

03 — Indicative Fares

Huizhou → Macau indicative fares for common routes

Below are one-way indicative fares for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class). Actual quotes depend on pickup area, destination, time of day and clearance waiting time, and include driver, tolls and port transfer; final confirmation applies. Huizhou is farther from Zhuhai/Macau, so fares sit higher than nearby cities such as Shenzhen or Zhongshan.

Huizhou to Macau indicative fares: Cotai/The Venetian from HK$1800, Macau Peninsula/St Paul's from HK$1900, Daya Bay from HK$1800, day return charter from HK$2800

Travel times are experience-based estimates including clearance and vary widely with port queues, traffic and time of day; holidays and weekend peaks usually take longer. For a 23-seat Coaster, round trips or full-day hire, ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance

One car all the way, how clearance works

The advantage of a licensed cross-border MPV is one car and one driver the whole way; you just complete the immigration check at the port.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
Driver arrives at your Huizhou pickup address at the agreed time and loads luggage
  • STEP 2 · To Zhuhai
Drive to the Zhuhai port via the Shenhai / Guang'ao expressway, with service-area stops along the way
  • STEP 3 · Clearance
Hengqin "joint inspection, single release" in one stop; or immigration via the HZMB Zhuhai Port
  • STEP 4 · Direct
After clearance, the same car continues to your Macau destination — no change of vehicle, no transfer

05 — Why a charter

Why can't you just drive to Macau yourself?

To cross into Macau, both the car and the driver must be pre-approved. Guangdong-Macau dual plates (Yue-Z plate + Macau plate) come with an extremely scarce quota, strict approval and high holding and annual costs, issued mainly to specific business / investment entities — out of reach for ordinary travellers. Hong Kong's "Northbound Travel" scheme only lets eligible HK private cars use the HZMB to and from Guangdong; it does not allow entry into Macau and requires winning an online ballot. Under GovHK cross-border driving rules, legal crossing needs a mainland driving licence, a Guangdong Public Security "Approval Notice", plus the Transport Department's Closed Road Permit (CRP) and International Circulation Permit (ICP) all at once — a long, high-barrier process that ordinary cars effectively cannot meet for "ride straight from Huizhou into Macau".

Without the proper licence and port quota, an ordinary mainland or Hong Kong car cannot legally move freely in and out of Macau. That is exactly why a "licensed cross-border MPV + professional driver" is the mainstream choice for Huizhou-Macau trips.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Can I drive my own car from Huizhou to Macau?
Generally no. An ordinary private car has no Macau entry licence; Guangdong-Macau dual-plate quotas are very few and strictly approved, and Hong Kong's "Northbound Travel" only reaches Guangdong, not Macau. The practical options are a licensed cross-border charter, or driving to the Zhuhai port then walking across and transferring. Source: GovHK cross-border driving.
Which port do vehicles from Huizhou use for Macau?
Mainly Hengqin Port (joint inspection, single release, 24h) or the HZMB Zhuhai Highway Port to enter Macau; Gongbei and Qingmao are pedestrian-only and do not take vehicles. The exact port follows your fleet's licensed eligibility.
How long does Huizhou to Macau take?
Huizhou city to Macau is about 220–250 km, roughly 3.5–4.5 hours in normal traffic (including clearance waiting); Daya Bay / Huiyang is a little closer, Boluo / Huidong a little farther. All estimates — holiday clearance peaks take longer.
What documents do I need for Macau?
Mainland residents need an Exit-Entry Permit (EEP) with a valid Macau endorsement (individual G, group L, business, etc.); foreign travellers use a passport (most nationalities get 30-day visa-free stay); Hong Kong / Macau residents use a Home Return Permit or local ID. Check the Macau Public Security Police rules before you travel.
Roughly how much is a Huizhou-Macau charter?
One-way is roughly HK$1,800–2,800+, depending on pickup area, vehicle type (5–7 seats), round trip or not, and clearance time; farther than Shenzhen (from HK$700) or Zhongshan (HK$1,700+), so the range is higher. All estimates — live quotes apply.
Can the HZMB take me straight from Huizhou to Macau?
The bridge links Hong Kong with Zhuhai / Macau. From Huizhou (mainland) you take the mainland expressway to Zhuhai, then enter Macau via Hengqin or the bridge's Zhuhai port — not through Hong Kong. The bridge uses "three places, three checks", with Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau each inspecting separately.
Are the Macau ports open 24 hours?
Hengqin Port and the HZMB port both run 24 hours; Gongbei is pedestrian-only and not round-the-clock (about 06:00 to 01:00 the next day). Sources: HK Immigration Department, Hengqin Port information.
