Renting a car in Huizhou to drive to Macau?
Find out why self-drive doesn't work, then book a licensed chauffeured MPV

Many people search for "rent a car in Huizhou and self-drive to Macau," but ordinary mainland cars and rental cars simply cannot enter Macau. Give us your pickup address, destination and vehicle type, and we send a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver, clearing customs legally via Hengqin or the HZMB Zhuhai port, door to door, with no two-plate licence or quota for you to chase.

01 — Overview

Huizhou to Macau: "renting a car and driving yourself" doesn't actually work

Huizhou is about 220–250 km from the Zhuhai-Macau area, so on paper it is a single highway run to Zhuhai. The real obstacle is the last checkpoint: ordinary mainland private cars, and any car you rent in Huizhou, have no entry plate for Macau and cannot drive freely into the city. Guangdong-Macau two-plate quotas are extremely scarce and tightly approved; Hong Kong's "Northbound Travel" scheme only reaches Guangdong, not Macau. In short, the "rent a car in Huizhou and self-drive to Macau" idea is, for compliance reasons, almost a non-starter.

The practical approach is to have a licensed cross-border MPV that already holds the plates and port quota, paired with a professional driver, take you from your Huizhou pickup address straight to your Macau destination, completing checks only at the port. We have run Hong Kong and Macau cross-border charters for ten years with 30+ owned MPVs. Below we explain why self-drive fails, how to pick a port, how long it takes, and what documents you need.

02 — Ports

Only two Macau ports let cars through, so know them before you choose

From Huizhou you take the mainland expressway to Zhuhai, then enter Macau from the Zhuhai side. The ports that actually allow cars are Hengqin Port and the HZMB Zhuhai highway port; Gongbei and Qingmao, though familiar crossing points, are foot-passenger only and cannot pass vehicles.

Huizhou to Macau ports guide: Hengqin Port 24h joint inspection single release car-passable, HZMB Zhuhai port 24h car-passable quota required, Gongbei and Qingmao foot-only no cars

Note: Hengqin Port uses "joint inspection, single release" one-stop clearance, operates 24 hours, and leads straight to Cotai / Taipa after crossing; the HZMB uses "three places, three checks," with Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau each inspecting separately, and cross-border vehicles must hold valid plates and quota. Gongbei is the busiest passenger checkpoint, roughly 06:00 to 01:00 the next day and foot-passenger only; Qingmao runs 24 hours but is also foot-only. Opening hours and car-passable status follow official notices (see sources at the end).

03 — Reference fares

Huizhou → Macau reference fares for common routes

The following are single-trip reference fares for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class). Actual quotes depend on the pickup area, destination, vehicle type, round trip or not, and clearance waiting time, and include driver, tolls and port transfer; final confirmation applies. Huizhou is farther from Zhuhai-Macau than Shenzhen or Zhongshan, so the range is correspondingly higher.

Huizhou to Macau route reference fares: Huizhou city to Cotai from HK$1800, Daya Bay Huiyang to Macau Peninsula from HK$1800, Boluo Huidong to Venetian from HK$2200, Huizhou round trip from HK$3400

Drive times are experience-based estimates including clearance and are heavily affected by port queues, traffic and time of day; peaks and public holidays usually take longer. For a 23-seat Coaster group vehicle or round trip / full-day charter, ask for a separate quote. The above are estimates; actual fares follow the live quote.

04 — Clearance

One car all the way, how clearance works

The advantage of a licensed cross-border MPV is one car and one driver throughout; you only need to clear immigration at the port, with no two-plate licence or quota to handle yourself.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
The driver arrives at your Huizhou pickup address at the agreed time and loads luggage
  • STEP 2 · To Zhuhai
Drive via the Shenhai / Guang'ao expressway to the Zhuhai port for mainland exit checks
  • STEP 3 · Entry
Hengqin "joint inspection, single release" done in one stop; HZMB port handles Macau entry per current arrangements
  • STEP 4 · Direct
After clearance, the same car goes straight to your Macau destination, no transfers

05 — Why charter

Why can't you just rent a car and drive to Macau?

For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. Ordinary mainland or Hong Kong private cars cannot enter Macau: Guangdong-Macau two-plate licences (Yue-Z plate + Macau plate) carry extremely scarce quotas, strict approval and high holding and annual costs, and are mainly issued to specific business or investment entities, so ordinary travellers and rental cars almost never obtain one. Hong Kong's "Northbound Travel" only allows eligible Hong Kong private cars to use the HZMB to and from Guangdong Province, not into Macau, and requires an online ballot for quota. Under GovHK's Guangdong-Hong Kong cross-border driving rules, lawful crossing also requires a mainland driving licence, an "Approval Notice" from the Guangdong Public Security Department, and the Closed Road Permit (CRP) and International Circulation Permit (ICP) issued by the Hong Kong Transport Department. The process is long and the bar is high — which is exactly why "rent a car in Huizhou and self-drive to Macau" does not work.

Ordinary and rental cars have no Macau entry plate or quota and cannot legally move in and out of Macau. Chartering a licensed cross-border fleet that already holds the plates and port quota is the most practical and compliant way to travel between Huizhou and Macau.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Can I rent a car in Huizhou and drive to Macau myself?
Basically no. Ordinary private cars and any car you rent in Huizhou have no Macau entry plate; Guangdong-Macau two-plate quotas are very limited and strictly approved, and Hong Kong's "Northbound Travel" only reaches Guangdong, not Macau. The practical option is a licensed cross-border charter, or going to the Zhuhai port first and crossing on foot to transfer. Source: GovHK Guangdong-Hong Kong cross-border driving.
Which port do vehicles use from Huizhou to Macau?
Mainly via Hengqin Port (joint inspection, single release, 24h) or the HZMB Zhuhai highway port; Gongbei and Qingmao are foot-only and cannot pass vehicles. The exact port follows the fleet's licensed eligibility.
How long does Huizhou to Macau take?
Huizhou city to Macau is about 220–250 km, roughly 3.5–4.5 hours in normal traffic (including clearance waiting); Daya Bay / Huiyang is a little closer, Boluo / Huidong a little farther. All estimates; holiday clearance peaks take longer.
What documents do I need for Macau?
Mainland residents need the Exit-Entry Permit (EEP) plus a valid Macau endorsement; foreign travellers use a passport (most nationalities get 30 days visa-free); Hong Kong and Macau residents use the Home Return Permit or local ID. Check against Macau Public Security Police rules before you travel.
Roughly how much is a Huizhou-Macau charter?
Single trip is about HK$1,800–2,800+, depending on pickup area, vehicle type (5–7 seats), round trip or not, and clearance time; farther than Shenzhen (from HK$700) or Zhongshan (HK$1,700+), so the range is higher. All estimates; the live quote applies.
Can I drive from Huizhou to Macau directly via the HZMB?
The bridge links Hong Kong with Zhuhai / Macau. From Huizhou (mainland) you take the mainland expressway to Zhuhai, then enter Macau via Hengqin or the bridge's Zhuhai port, not through Hong Kong. The bridge uses "three places, three checks," with Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau each inspecting.
Are the Macau ports open 24 hours?
Hengqin Port and the HZMB port both clear 24 hours; Gongbei Port is foot-only and not round-the-clock (about 06:00 to 01:00 the next day). Source: Hong Kong Immigration Department, Hengqin Port information.
