01 — Overview

From Guangzhou to Macau, the easiest way is one car the whole way

Guangzhou and Macau are just over a hundred kilometres apart, but "driving across" is not as simple as getting on the expressway. The only road crossing that lets a vehicle enter Macau is the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge Zhuhai road port, and neither ordinary mainland (Guangdong) plates nor Macau single plates may cross freely. For most travellers, the genuinely hassle-free option is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver who takes you from your Guangzhou pickup address straight to your Macau destination, clearing only at the port along the way, with no vehicle change and no dragging luggage through a transfer.

We have run Hong Kong and Macau cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs and over 50,000 customers served. Below we lay it all out at once: how to pick the port, how long the drive takes, how clearance works, and why self-driving is so difficult.

02 — Ports

Only one main crossing lets a vehicle enter Macau

For vehicles coming from Guangzhou by road, the only main crossing that lets a car through is the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge Zhuhai road port (24-hour, separated Zhuhai/Macau clearance, open to vehicles holding a valid cross-border plate). Hengqin port is limited to Macau single-plate and specific policy vehicles and is not open to ordinary Guangdong-plate tourist cars; Gongbei port is the busiest pedestrian inspection crossing and handles foot passengers only, with no vehicle lane. For late nights and red-eye flights, the round-the-clock Zhuhai bridge port is the choice.

Zhuhai–Macau cross-border ports: HZMB Zhuhai port 24h vehicles, Hengqin 24h single-plate only, Gongbei 06:00-01:00 pedestrians only, Qingmao 24h pedestrians only

Note: Hengqin, Gongbei and Qingmao ports either serve only Macau single-plate / policy vehicles or handle pedestrians only, so none of them passes ordinary Guangdong-plate tourist cars from Guangzhou. The HZMB Zhuhai road port has offered 24-hour clearance since it opened on 24 Oct 2018; the Zhuhai and Macau ports sit side by side with separated inspection. Opening hours and vehicle-crossing status follow the latest official notices (see sources at the end).

Travel times are experience-based estimates including clearance and are strongly affected by port queues, traffic and time of day; peaks, public holidays and Fridays / Sundays usually take longer. One-way sedans are quoted separately (from about HK$2,000). For a 23-seat Coaster group vehicle, round trips or full-day charters, please request a separate quote.

04 — Clearance flow

One car all the way,how clearance works

The benefit of a licensed cross-border MPV is one car and one driver the whole way; all you do is complete immigration inspection at the port.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
The driver arrives at your Guangzhou pickup address at the agreed time to collect you and load luggage
  • STEP 2 · Exit
Drive via the Guangzhou–Zhuhai Expressway to the HZMB Zhuhai road port for mainland exit clearance
  • STEP 3 · Entry
Separated Zhuhai/Macau clearance; cross the bridge and complete Macau entry inspection
  • STEP 4 · Direct
After clearance, the same car drives you straight to your Macau destination, no change, no transfer

05 — Why charter

Why can't you just drive to Macau yourself?

For cross-border driving, both the vehicle and the driver must be approved first. Neither ordinary Guangdong-plate cars nor Macau single-plate cars have free cross-border eligibility: to legally drive a Guangzhou car into Macau, it needs a "dual plate" (a Guangdong-Z / FV cross-border plate) or a slot under policies such as "HK Vehicles Northbound", "Macau Vehicles Northbound" or "Hengqin single-plate". Dual plates have long been quota-managed, with lengthy approvals and high thresholds on corporate qualifications and tax / investment, making them extremely hard for individuals to obtain; the policy schemes also carry quota caps and eligibility limits and do not cover an ordinary traveller turning up and going.

Ordinary vehicles without a cross-border plate or the matching permit cannot legally travel freely between Guangzhou and Macau. That is exactly why a "licensed cross-border MPV + professional driver" has become the mainstream choice for point-to-point Guangzhou-Macau transfers.

06 — FAQ

Before you go,the questions people ask most

Can I drive my own car from Guangzhou to Macau?
Ordinary Guangdong-plate / mainland vehicles have no cross-border eligibility and cannot drive directly into Macau; you need a dual plate or a slot under policies such as HK Vehicles Northbound. For ordinary travellers, the workable options are to book a licensed cross-border charter, or self-drive to a Zhuhai port and transfer across.
Which port do you cross at from Guangzhou to Macau?
The only main crossing that passes vehicles is the HZMB Zhuhai road port (24-hour, open to cars with a cross-border plate). Hengqin port is for Macau single-plate / specific policy vehicles only; Gongbei port handles pedestrians only and passes no vehicles.
Roughly how long is a Guangzhou-to-Macau charter?
An estimated 2.5–4 hours including clearance, depending on departure zone and traffic: Nansha / Panyu are closer at about 2.5–3 hours, the city centre about 3–4 hours. All estimates.
What documents do mainland residents need for Macau?
A valid Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) plus a valid Macau endorsement (individual G or group endorsement). Entering Macau directly via the HZMB Zhuhai port needs only the Macau endorsement; if you transfer via Hong Kong you also need a Hong Kong endorsement.
Can foreign travellers charter from Guangzhou to Macau?
Yes. You need a valid passport and entry eligibility for Macau (most nationalities are visa-free for about 7–30 days); if you transit the mainland you need a valid Chinese visa, and a multiple-entry visa to re-enter after leaving the mainland.
Is the HZMB Zhuhai port open 24 hours?
Yes. The port has provided 24-hour clearance since it opened on 24 October 2018 (source: Hong Kong Immigration Department 60th Anniversary commemorative publication).
Can a Macau single-plate car drive to Guangzhou?
Not freely northbound. Schemes such as Macau Vehicles Northbound and Hengqin single-plate carry quotas, scope and eligibility limits, which is not the same as ordinary vehicles travelling freely to and from Guangzhou.
