01 — Overview

From Foshan to Macau,a licensed charter all the way is the surest option

Foshan sits roughly 120–180 km from the Zhuhai-Macau ports, reached via the Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Expressway into Zhuhai before crossing on a vehicle-capable port. The catch: an ordinary Foshan-plated (Yue E) private car has no cross-border eligibility, and only two ports actually let vehicles through — Hengqin and the HZMB Zhuhai Port. For most travellers, the most practical and certain choice is a compliant MPV on a Yue Z dual plate with a professional driver, taking you from your Foshan pickup address straight to your Macau destination. You only clear immigration at the port — no changing vehicles, no dragging luggage onto a shuttle.

We've run Hong Kong-Macau cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs and 50,000+ customers served. Below we lay out which port to use, how long the drive takes, how clearance works, and why self-driving is so hard.

02 — Ports

Only two ports take vehicles — know them before you choose

Most Zhuhai-Macau crossings are pedestrian-only (such as Gongbei and Qingmao). The ones that actually take vehicles are the Hengqin Port and the HZMB Zhuhai highway port, both open 24 hours. Late-night and early-morning trips work the same, since both ports run around the clock.

Zhuhai-Macau crossing guide: Hengqin Port 24h joint-inspection vehicle crossing, HZMB Zhuhai Port 24h vehicle crossing, Gongbei pedestrians only, Qingmao pedestrians only

Note: Gongbei is one of the busiest land ports in China, but it is pedestrian-only — no vehicles; Qingmao, opened in 2021, is likewise pedestrian-only. Self-drive and charter cars cannot cross at Gongbei or Qingmao and must use Hengqin or the HZMB Zhuhai highway port. Hengqin runs "joint inspection, single release" and sits close to the Cotai Strip (The Venetian, Galaxy and more). Opening hours and vehicle eligibility follow official notices (see sources at the end).

03 — Reference fares

Foshan → Macau reference fares for common routes

The fares below are one-way reference prices for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class). The actual quote depends on pickup district, destination, time slot and port, and includes driver, tolls and port transfer; final confirmation applies. Foshan is around 120–180 km from the Zhuhai-Macau ports — generally farther than the Shenzhen and Zhongshan routes — so fares run higher.

Foshan to Macau reference fares: Shunde to Cotai from HK$1900, Chancheng/Nanhai to Macau Peninsula from HK$2200, Sanshui/Gaoming to Macau from HK$2800

Drive times are experience-based estimates including clearance and vary widely with port queues, traffic and time slot; peaks, holidays and Friday / Sunday evenings usually run longer. For a 23-seat Coaster group vehicle or round-trip / full-day hire, ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance

One car all the way,how clearance works

The advantage of a licensed cross-border MPV is one car and one driver throughout — you simply complete immigration checks at the port.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
Your driver arrives at your Foshan pickup address on time and loads the luggage
  • STEP 2 · Transit
Straight to Zhuhai on the Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Expressway, heading for Hengqin or the HZMB Zhuhai Port
  • STEP 3 · Clearance
Hengqin "joint inspection, single release" handles it in one stop; the HZMB Zhuhai Port follows current arrangements
  • STEP 4 · Direct
After clearance, the same car drives straight to your Macau destination — no change, no transfer

05 — Why charter

Why can't you just drive to Macau yourself?

For cross-border driving, both the car and the driver must be approved first. An ordinary Foshan-plated (Yue E) private car has no cross-border eligibility — driving into Macau requires a Guangdong-HK-Macau cross-border vehicle licence, the so-called dual plate (a Yue Z Macau plate for Macau), plus a Closed Road Permit and an allotted quota. Quotas are persistently scarce and hard to obtain, usually tied to a company's Guangdong investment / tax contribution or operating qualifications; individuals rarely get one on their own, and applications must be made in person at a designated Guangdong vehicle office with a medical check. Note too that "HK vehicles northbound" lets Hong Kong single-plate cars enter Guangdong — the opposite direction, and not bound for Macau; the "Guangdong vehicles southbound" pilot is destined for Hong Kong. Neither solves the need to ride straight from Foshan into Macau in a mainland car.

For travellers setting out from Foshan, booking a compliant cross-border charter already on a Yue Z dual plate (with driver), crossing legally at the port, is the most practical and certain option — and it removes the high barrier of arranging permits and quotas yourself.

06 — FAQ

Before you go,the questions people ask most

Can a Foshan car drive straight into Macau?
No. An ordinary Yue E private car has no cross-border eligibility. Entering Macau needs a Yue Z Macau dual plate plus a Closed Road Permit and quota — and quotas are scarce with a high bar. The practical option is to ride in a compliant charter that already holds a Yue Z dual plate.
Which port does the car use from Foshan to Macau?
Vehicles mainly use the Hengqin Port or the HZMB Zhuhai highway port — both open 24 hours and both take vehicles. Gongbei and Qingmao are pedestrian-only and cannot be used by self-drive or charter cars.
Can "HK vehicles northbound" let me drive from Foshan to Macau?
No. That scheme lets Hong Kong single-plate cars enter Guangdong via the HZMB — the opposite direction, bound for Guangdong rather than Macau. For Foshan to Macau, use a licensed cross-border charter.
How long does Foshan to Macau take?
Roughly 2.5–4 hours, including 30–60 minutes of clearance, depending on your departure district and traffic; Shunde is closer, Sanshui / Gaoming farther.
What documents do mainland residents need for Macau?
An Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau (EEP) plus a valid Macau tourist endorsement (individual "G" or group "L") — both are required and must be in date. Foreign travellers use a passport, with visa-free entry or a visa by nationality.
Roughly how much is a cross-border charter?
By distance, one way runs from about HK$1,900, rising to HK$2,800+ for far districts (Sanshui / Gaoming) — higher than the Shenzhen and Zhongshan routes because Foshan is farther from the Zhuhai-Macau ports. The actual price depends on vehicle, passengers and round trip.
What's the difference between Hengqin and Gongbei?
Hengqin is 24-hour, takes vehicles and runs "joint inspection, single release," sitting near Cotai and The Venetian; Gongbei is the busiest land port but pedestrian-only — self-drive / charter cars must switch to Hengqin or the HZMB port.
