Renting a car in Foshan to drive to Macau?
Understand the cross-boundary permits first, then choose a licensed charter
Many people want to rent a car in Foshan and self-drive to Macau, but ordinary Guangdong-E (Yue-E) private cars have no cross-boundary status, and a rental car cannot clear the border either. This guide first explains dual plates, quotas and the "HK-cars-go-north" scheme, then shows the smoothest alternative: a licensed Yue-Z dual-plate charter with a professional driver, door to door.
01 — Overview
Renting a car in Foshan for Macau:the issue isn't the car, it's the permit
Renting a car in Foshan to self-drive into Macau sounds liberating, but you'd be stopped at the very first checkpoint. Macau enforces strict permit and quota controls on entering vehicles. An ordinary Foshan-registered (Yue-E) private car — whether your own or a rental — has no right to cross into Macau. Without a "Yue-Z Macau plate" (commonly called a dual plate) and a Closed Road Permit, the vehicle simply cannot clear the Hengqin or Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge port. In short, renting a car in Foshan to self-drive to Macau is, legally, essentially a non-starter.
We've run Hong Kong and Macau cross-boundary transfers for ten years, with 30+ self-owned business vans and 50,000+ customers served. We don't offer self-drive rentals; instead we provide licensed cross-boundary charters that already hold Yue-Z dual plates — with a professional driver, from your Foshan pickup address straight to your Macau destination. Below we lay out which port to use, why self-driving is so hard, and indicative prices.

02 — Ports
Only two ports take vehicles — know them before you drive or charter
Heading from Foshan to Macau, the land ports that actually take vehicles are Hengqin Port and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Zhuhai Highway Port, both operating 24 hours. The busiest port, Gongbei, and the newly opened Qingmao Port handle pedestrians only — no vehicles — so neither self-drive nor charter can cross through them.

Note: Gongbei and Qingmao handle pedestrians and immigration checks only — no vehicles. Hengqin Port runs "joint inspection, one-stop clearance" and is near Macau's Cotai Strip (Venetian, Galaxy, etc.); the HZMB Zhuhai Port sits on the Zhuhai-Macau artificial island, connected to the Macau Port. Opening hours and vehicle status follow the official pages (see sources at the end).
03 — Indicative prices
Foshan → Macau common-route indicative prices
The following are one-way indicative prices for a licensed 7-seat business van (Alphard / V-Class) with driver. Actual quotes depend on pickup district, destination, time and port, and include driver, tolls and port transfer; final confirmation applies. Foshan is roughly 120–180 km from the Zhuhai-Macau ports — generally farther than Shenzhen or Zhongshan — so prices run higher.

| Route | Typical port | Est. travel time | 7-seat indicative (one-way) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foshan Shunde → Macau Cotai (Venetian) | Hengqin | ~150–210 min | From HK$ 1,900 |
| Foshan Chancheng / Nanhai → Macau Peninsula (St. Paul's) | Hengqin / HZMB Zhuhai | ~180–240 min | From HK$ 2,200 |
| Foshan Nanhai → Macau Cotai hotels | Hengqin | ~170–230 min | From HK$ 2,100 |
| Foshan Sanshui / Gaoming → Macau key sights | Hengqin / HZMB Zhuhai | ~210–300 min | From HK$ 2,800 |
| Foshan city → Macau (round trip / full day) | Hengqin / HZMB Zhuhai | By itinerary | Quote on request |
Travel times are experience-based estimates including clearance and are heavily affected by port queues, traffic and time of day; peaks, holidays and Fri / Sun are usually longer. For a 23-seat Coaster group vehicle or round-trip / full-day hire, please request a separate quote.
04 — Clearance flow
Licensed charter,how clearance works
The benefit of a licensed Yue-Z dual-plate charter is one car, one driver the whole way — you only need to complete immigration checks at the port. No permits to arrange, no luggage transfers.
- STEP 1 · PickupDriver arrives at your Foshan pickup address at the agreed time and loads luggage
- STEP 2 · ExitHeads via the Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Expressway to the port for Mainland exit checks
- STEP 3 · EntryHengqin "joint inspection, one-stop clearance" handles Macau entry; or cross via the HZMB Zhuhai Port
- STEP 4 · DirectAfter clearance, the same car drives straight to your Macau destination — no transfers
05 — Why charter
Why can't a rental self-drive into Macau?
For cross-boundary driving, both the car and the driver must be approved in advance. Driving into Macau requires the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau cross-boundary vehicle licence" — the dual plate (a Yue-Z Macau plate for Macau) — plus a Closed Road Permit and an allocated quota. Quotas have long been scarce and hard to obtain, typically tied to a company's Guangdong investment / tax contribution or operating credentials; individuals can rarely secure one, and must apply in person at a designated Guangdong vehicle administration office with a medical check. That's exactly why an ordinary Yue-E car you rent in Foshan lacks these permits and can't clear the border. As for "HK cars go north," that scheme lets Hong Kong single-plate cars drive into Guangdong via the HZMB (HK→GD), with Guangdong as the destination, not Macau; the matching "GD cars go south" pilot targets Hong Kong — neither solves "a Mainland car driving directly into Macau."
An ordinary Foshan-plate or rental car, without a Yue-Z dual plate and the matching permits, legally cannot drive into Macau. That's precisely why a "licensed cross-boundary charter + professional driver" has become the mainstream option for point-to-point Foshan–Macau transfers.
