Can't rent a car to self-drive to Macau?
A licensed chauffeured charter goes straight there

Renting a car in Dongguan to self-drive into Macau almost always hits the "dual-plate / quota" wall. A mainland single-plate car simply can't enter Macau. The practical option is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver: tell us your pickup address and vehicle type, and we run via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link to the Zhuhai port for transfer, or arrange the full door-to-door trip.

01 — Overview

Dongguan to Macau, why "rent and self-drive" doesn't work

Plenty of travellers in Dongguan picture renting a car and driving themselves to Macau, but crossing the border is not as simple as getting the keys. Only a handful of ports allow vehicles through, and an ordinary mainland single-plate car without a Guangdong–Macau dual plate or the matching quota cannot drive into Macau at all. Rental companies will not let you take their car across the border either. For most people the sensible, compliant choice is a licensed cross-border MPV with a professional driver: from your Dongguan pickup address via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link straight to the Zhuhai-side port, where you clear immigration and a Macau-side car meets you — or a fully licensed door-to-door arrangement.

We have run Hong Kong and Macau cross-border charters for ten years, with 30+ owned MPVs. We do not offer self-drive rentals — only licensed charters and port-transfer connections. Below we lay out which port to use, how long the drive takes, why self-driving is so hard, and which documents to prepare.

02 — Ports

Only a few ports let vehicles through — know them before you choose

For Dongguan to Macau, cross-border vehicles mainly use the HZMB Zhuhai / Macau ports and Hengqin Port (all 24-hour, but all require the right cross-border plate). Gongbei is mainly for pedestrians and does not handle private cars. A mainland single-plate car cannot freely drive into Macau through any port, so the common pattern is "car to the port, walk across, Macau car meets you."

Dongguan to Macau border ports: HZMB Zhuhai Port 24h, HZMB Macau Port 24h, Hengqin Port 24h single-stop clearance, Gongbei Port mainly pedestrian

Note: the HZMB uses "three places, three checks" — Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau each run their own port and clearance; Hengqin Port uses the Guangdong–Macau "joint inspection, single-stop release" model. The vehicle lanes at these ports open only to qualified cars with a Guangdong–Macau dual plate, "Macau cars heading north" permits and the like; mainland single-plate cars cannot freely enter Macau. Opening hours and vehicle access follow on-site and official notices (see sources at the end).

03 — Reference fares

Dongguan → Macau reference fares for popular routes

The fares below are one-way reference prices for a 7-seat MPV (Alphard / V-Class), including driver, tolls and port transfer. Dongguan sits on the east bank of the Pearl River estuary with a mid-range distance via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link, so fares typically land between Shenzhen and the longer Zhongshan runs. Actual prices depend on pickup area, destination, time and port — final confirmation applies.

Dongguan to Macau reference fares: Chang'an/Binhai Bay from HK$1200, Nancheng/Guancheng from HK$1500, east Changping/Tangxia from HK$1600, Macau city/Taipa from HK$1700

Drive times are experience-based estimates including clearance and vary a lot with port queues, traffic and time of day; holidays and peak periods usually take longer. For a 23-seat Coaster, round trips or full-day hire, ask for a separate quote.

04 — Clearance

One car on the mainland leg, how clearance works

The advantage of a licensed charter is one car and one driver for the whole mainland leg — you just clear immigration at the port, then a Macau-side car takes you into town.

  • STEP 1 · Pickup
The driver arrives at your Dongguan pickup address on time to collect you and your luggage
  • STEP 2 · To the port
Via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link to the Zhuhai / Hengqin-side port, ready to cross
  • STEP 3 · Clearance
Complete mainland exit + Macau entry checks (Hengqin "single-stop release" is smoother)
  • STEP 4 · Macau connection
A licensed Macau-side car takes you straight to St. Paul's / Venetian / your hotel

05 — Why charter

Why renting and self-driving to Macau doesn't work

To drive across the border, both the car and the driver must be approved first. For an ordinary mainland or Hong Kong private car to enter Macau legally, it needs a scarce Guangdong–Macau dual plate and quota — the "Yue Z" dual plate has long been tied to qualifications such as corporate investment, with very limited new quotas, so individuals rarely get one. The "Hong Kong cars heading north" scheme (launched in 2023) only lets eligible Hong Kong private cars head north into Guangdong via the HZMB, and even then it requires a quota by ballot and an online booking, is limited to Hong Kong → Guangdong for private non-commercial use, cannot carry paying passengers, and does not drive into Macau directly. None of this solves "rent a car in Dongguan and self-drive into Macau" — and rental firms won't let you take the car across the border.

An ordinary mainland single-plate car, without a Guangdong–Macau dual plate or the right permit, cannot legally drive into Macau. That is exactly why "a licensed charter on the mainland leg + a port transfer to a Macau car" is the practical, compliant way to go from Dongguan to Macau.

06 — FAQ

Before you go, the questions people ask most

Can I rent a car in Dongguan and self-drive straight to Macau?
Almost never. An ordinary mainland single-plate car without a Guangdong–Macau dual plate can't freely drive into Macau; dual-plate quotas are scarce and hard to get, and rental companies won't let you take the car across the border. "Hong Kong cars heading north" only covers Hong Kong private cars to and from Guangdong via the HZMB, and doesn't go into Macau. The practical option is a licensed cross-border charter, or "charter on the mainland leg to the Zhuhai port → walk across → Macau-side car meets you."
Which port is most convenient from Dongguan to Macau?
Cross-border vehicles mainly use the HZMB Zhuhai / Macau ports and Hengqin Port (all 24-hour, but requiring the right cross-border plate). If you walk across and transfer, you can clear at Hengqin or Gongbei and have a Macau car meet you. The exact port is arranged by the operator based on the car's permits and your destination.
How long is the drive from Dongguan to Macau?
The mainland leg alone is about 2–3 hours (via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link, depending on your exact pickup area and traffic). With port clearance and the Macau connection, the total is usually around 2.5–4 hours. Holidays and peak clearance periods add noticeably more. These are estimates.
What documents do I need for Macau?
Mainland residents need the Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) plus a valid Macau endorsement (individual "G", group "L", business, etc.); accompanying children need their own permit and endorsement. Foreign visitors need a valid passport — most nationalities are visa-free or allowed a short stay in Macau. Keep documents in date and make sure the endorsement is for "Macau."
Is the HZMB "one location, two checks" or "three places, three checks"?
The HZMB ports use "three places, three checks" — Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau each run their own port and clearance (source: Hong Kong Immigration Department). Hengqin Port uses the Guangdong–Macau "joint inspection, single-stop release" model.
Why does a cross-border charter cost more than a normal city ride?
The cost mainly reflects the scarce dual-plate licence and quota, cross-border insurance, port clearance and waiting, plus the long one-way distance. Dongguan sits at a mid-to-far range from the Zhuhai port, so fares are typically higher than a Shenzhen departure and close to the longer Zhongshan runs.
What are the HZMB port opening hours?
24-hour clearance. The HZMB Zhuhai and Macau ports and Hengqin Port all offer round-the-clock immigration services; Gongbei Port is mainly for pedestrians and does not handle private cars.
