01 · Start with positioning

Three airports, three kinds of traveller

The first step in choosing an airport is not comparing distance, it is looking at where your destination and your route lie. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) at Chek Lap Kok handled about 53.1 million passengers in 2024 (nearly 49.9 million international), connects more than 200 destinations worldwide, and is the first choice for long-haul intercontinental travel and transfers; the Airport Express reaches Hong Kong station in 24 minutes.

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) handled about 66.5 million passengers in 2024, the highest of the three, with the densest domestic network, the most frequent flights and usually lower fares, ideal if your destination is Shenzhen, Guangzhou or a mainland Greater Bay Area city. Macau International Airport (MFM) is the smallest, built around regional routes (the mainland, Taiwan, Southeast Asia) and tourist traffic, and works best when your destination is Macau or the western Zhuhai shore.

HKG Hong Kong

International / transfer

Long-haul intercontinental, 200+ destinations, the strongest transfer network. The SkyPier terminal lets transit passengers connect to ferries or cross-boundary coaches without entering Hong Kong.

SZX Shenzhen

Domestic / budget

The densest domestic network, frequent flights and often lower fares. Metro Line 11 connects to Futian to change onto the high-speed rail straight to Hong Kong West Kowloon.

MFM Macau

Regional / western shore

The smallest, most convenient when your destination is Macau or the western Zhuhai shore. Buses and taxis reach the Border Gate, Hengqin and the HZMB Macao port.

02 · Cross-border transfers

Each airport, and how to cross the border from it

Hong Kong airport (transfer channel, no entry)

Pure transit passengers can take a ferry from the SkyPier terminal direct to 9 ports including Shekou / Fuyong in Shenzhen, Nansha / Pazhou in Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Jiuzhou in Zhuhai, Humen in Dongguan and Macao, all without entering Hong Kong (check-in opens 30 minutes before sailing with no checked baggage, 60 minutes with baggage at area E2); or take a cross-boundary coach over the HZMB to the Zhuhai / Macao ports. Those who have formally entered (collected baggage and cleared customs) use a land port or a charter.

Shenzhen airport

Take Metro Line 11 (standard car CNY 2–10) to Futian station and change onto the high-speed rail straight to Hong Kong West Kowloon; or take a through-coach via Shenzhen Bay Port, clearing the border without changing vehicle, into urban Hong Kong or the airport.

Macau airport

Public buses (26 / 36 / AP1 and others) and taxis reach the Border Gate (towards Gongbei), the Hengqin port and the HZMB Macao port; through-coaches also run to and from Hong Kong via the HZMB.

04 · Late-night flights

Red-eye flights, which port still clears

The classic late-night trap is a port that has closed. Shenzhen Bay Port runs from about 06:30 to midnight; the only 24-hour land port between Shenzhen and Hong Kong is Huanggang; the HZMB Golden Bus also runs 24 hours. In other words, land between 00:00 and 06:30 and Shenzhen Bay is already shut: you have to use Huanggang or the HZMB.

The upside of a charter is that the driver picks a 24-hour channel ahead of time, based on your flight schedule and arrival port, and takes you point to point. No dragging luggage around in the small hours looking for a night bus or queueing.

Crossing late at night, picking the right 24-hour port matters more than which vehicle you take.

05 · How to choose

By destination, pick the right airport in three steps

Step one: where is the endpoint

If your endpoint is Shenzhen, Guangzhou or a mainland Greater Bay Area city, favour Shenzhen (SZX); if it is Macau or the western Zhuhai shore, favour Macau (MFM); for long-haul international or transfers, Hong Kong (HKG) has the most destinations.

Step two: look at the flight time

For a red-eye or late-night flight, confirm whether the port will still be open after you land: Shenzhen Bay closes at midnight, while Huanggang and the HZMB Golden Bus run 24 hours.

Step three: count people and luggage

For a family with bulky luggage, a 7-seat business MPV is the most comfortable. A 7-seat MPV (such as an Alphard) gets tight on luggage at full 7 occupancy, while 4–5 people plus bags is comfortable; confirm exact capacity and child seats with the charter operator.

A quick reminder

The SkyPier ferries are for transfer / transit passengers only and do not apply to locally originating travellers (those who have entered Hong Kong), who use a land port or a charter instead. Booking a cross-border charter involves dual plates and port quotas, with limited slots in peak season and at night, so book ahead.

06 · FAQ

Airport Transfer FAQ

Flying into the Greater Bay Area, should I pick Hong Kong, Macau or Shenzhen airport?

It depends on your destination and routes. For Shenzhen, Guangzhou or mainland GBA cities, or for low fares and frequent flights, pick Shenzhen Bao’an (SZX, ~66.5M passengers in 2024, the densest domestic network); for long-haul international or transfers, pick Hong Kong (HKG, 200+ destinations); if your destination is Macau or the western Pearl River shore, pick Macau (MFM).

From Hong Kong airport into the mainland, what is the fastest transfer?

If you are only transiting, you can take a ferry from SkyPier (9 piers including Shekou/Fuyong in Shenzhen and Nansha in Guangzhou) or a cross-boundary coach over the HZMB to Zhuhai/Macao without clearing Hong Kong immigration. If you have formally entered Hong Kong (collected baggage, cleared customs), use a land port or a charter.

What is the fastest way from Shenzhen airport to Hong Kong?

Take Metro Line 11 (standard car CNY 2–10) to Futian station and transfer to the high-speed rail straight to Hong Kong West Kowloon; or take a through-coach via Shenzhen Bay Port, clearing the border without changing vehicle, into urban Hong Kong or the airport.

On a red-eye / overnight flight, which port still clears?

Shenzhen Bay Port runs from about 06:30 to midnight; the only 24-hour land port between Shenzhen and Hong Kong is Huanggang; the HZMB Golden Bus also runs 24 hours. For overnight crossings, use Huanggang or the HZMB.

Family with lots of luggage, is a 7-seat MPV enough?

A 7-seat MPV (e.g. Alphard) gets tight on luggage at full 7 occupancy; 4–5 people plus bags is comfortable. Confirm seating and child seats with the charter operator.

How long from each airport to downtown Shenzhen?

Shenzhen is fastest locally (about 36 minutes to Futian by metro); the Hong Kong and Macau airports require a border crossing, so drive time depends on the port and traffic, check on the day.
