HZMB Hong Kong Port Crossing Guide
Clear Hong Kong first, then ride the Gold Bus across

HZMB Hong Kong Port sits on an artificial island (the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities) to the northeast of Hong Kong International Airport, at the Hong Kong end of the world's longest sea crossing. It is NOT co-location: you first clear Hong Kong immigration and customs at the HK Port, then take the Gold Bus (HZMB Shuttle Bus) or a cross-boundary vehicle across the roughly 42 km bridge to Zhuhai Port or Macao Port, where clearance is done separately. Below we set out the location, hours, layout, crossing steps and live imagery in one place.

01 — Port details

HZMB Hong Kong Port, the Greater Bay Area's gateway over the sea

HZMB Hong Kong Port stands on reclaimed land — the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF) island — northeast of Hong Kong International Airport, next to the airport and AsiaWorld-Expo. It is the Hong Kong end of the roughly 55 km HZMB bridge-tunnel system: here you complete Hong Kong immigration and customs, then take the Gold Bus or a cross-boundary vehicle over the bridge to Zhuhai or Macao.

For charter and business travel, its value is "fly-then-cross": arriving air passengers can reach the port close to the airport, and a licensed cross-boundary business car can pick you up door-to-port. It is a principal land route to the western Greater Bay Area and supports the quota-free "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" (港車北上) scheme letting eligible HK private cars self-drive to Guangdong.

02 — Layout

How to move through the port, explained in one flow schematic

The HZMB uses a "three-ports" model, so the key point is this: the HK Port handles Hong Kong formalities only, while mainland and Macao checks are done at Zhuhai Port and Macao Port after the bridge. Below is a flow schematic (not an architectural survey drawing) to give you a sense of direction before you set off.

Note: the HKBCF island has functional zones including a Passenger Clearance Building (HK immigration & customs e-Channels / counters), the Gold Bus and public-transport concourse, cross-boundary coach and hire-car berths, outbound/inbound vehicle clearance plazas and domestic car parks (specific floor/level numbering is not confirmed from a single authoritative diagram — follow on-site signage). Travellers clear only HK formalities here; clearance is repeated separately at Zhuhai Port / Macao Port after the bridge. Layout and flow defer to on-site signage and the latest notices of the HK Transport Department and Immigration Department (see sources at the foot).

03 — Crossing steps

From Hong Kong to Zhuhai / Macao, this is how the HZMB crossing works

The "three-ports" model means you first complete Hong Kong formalities at the HK Port, then cross the bridge to clear separately at Zhuhai / Macao Port. Below is a typical outbound flow (Hong Kong → Zhuhai / Macao).

  • STEP 1 · Reach the port
Drive in via North Lantau Highway + Shun Long Road or the Tuen Mun–Chek Lap Kok Tunnel; or take B4 / B5 / B6, an airport "A" route, minibus or taxi to the public-transport interchange
  • STEP 2 · Clear Hong Kong
Enter the Passenger Clearance Building departure hall and complete HK immigration & customs (e-Channels available); cross-boundary travellers need a valid travel document
  • STEP 3 · Board the Gold Bus / vehicle
Shuttle passengers go to the concourse and buy/tap for the Gold Bus (choose HK Port → Zhuhai Port or → Macao Port); coach / hire-car passengers board at the outbound vehicle plaza
  • STEP 4 · Cross the bridge
Cross the ~42 km HZMB (bridge and tunnel); after joining the mainland link road you must keep RIGHT — follow the on-site transition signs
  • STEP 5 · Clear separately
Arrive at Zhuhai Port / Macao Port, clear mainland (Zhuhai) or Macao immigration & customs, then transfer to local transport into the city

04 — Connections

Getting to / from HZMB Hong Kong Port, the main options

The Hong Kong side has a public-transport interchange next to the airport; after the bridge, the Gold Bus connects to Zhuhai and Macao. The main options are below.

Hong Kong side · Feeder buses

Franchised buses B4 / B5 / B6

B4 to/from the Airport / AsiaWorld-Expo, B5 to/from Sunny Bay Station and B6 to/from Tung Chung Station serve the port directly; some airport "A" routes also stop here, plus green minibus and taxi.

Across the bridge · Gold Bus

HZMB Shuttle Bus (Gold Bus)

Runs from the HK Port to Zhuhai Port or Macao Port and is the main way for travellers without a cross-boundary vehicle to cross; frequent, with late-night services — check the official timetable.

Door-to-port · Charter

Licensed cross-boundary business car

Picks you up in Hong Kong and takes you straight to the HK Port (then Gold Bus), or crosses the bridge directly as a cross-boundary hire car / "港車北上" private car — no repeated transfers, no dragging luggage.

05 — Live waiting time / imagery

Before you go,check the live imagery and traffic

How busy the port is varies a lot by time of day and holidays. Below are official real-time resources from Hong Kong government departments — worth checking before you travel (external links, open in a new window).

06 — How charter connects

Via the HZMB,how to run the whole trip smoothly in one ride

An ordinary mainland or Hong Kong car cannot cross the bridge freely without the licence and quota required. Most people choose a "licensed cross-boundary business car + professional driver" to the HK Port, then the Gold Bus — or a cross-boundary hire car / "港車北上" private car straight over the bridge. Flying into Hong Kong puts you close to the port, which suits families, elderly travellers and business guests especially well.

The HZMB suits travel to and from Zhuhai and Macao, or "fly into Hong Kong then cross" itineraries; because it is a three-ports model, you still clear separately at Zhuhai / Macao Port after the bridge, so allow time in your schedule.

07 — FAQ

About HZMB Hong Kong Port, the questions people ask most

Can vehicles cross at HZMB Hong Kong Port?
Yes. HZMB Hong Kong Port serves the HZMB Shuttle Bus (Gold Bus), cross-boundary coaches, cross-boundary hire cars, and private cars and goods vehicles under quota schemes — including the quota-free "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" (港車北上) scheme. Domestic (HK-side) car parks are available, with advance booking recommended. Cross-boundary vehicles need the licence/quota required to use the bridge.
What are the operating hours of HZMB Hong Kong Port?
The Hong Kong Port and its immigration clearance operate 24 hours a day. The Gold Bus, cross-boundary coaches and feeder transport each run to their own timetables, with sparser late-night services — check the latest Gold Bus and Transport Department schedules before you travel.
Is HZMB Hong Kong Port a "co-location" crossing?
No. It uses a "three separate ports" (one-bridge-three-checkpoints) model: you first complete Hong Kong immigration and customs at the HK Port, then take the Gold Bus (or a cross-boundary vehicle) across the ~42 km bridge to Zhuhai Port or Macao Port, where mainland/Macao clearance is done separately — it is not a single one-stop clearance.
How do I reach Zhuhai or Macao city centre after clearing?
From the HK Port, board the Gold Bus to either Zhuhai Port or Macao Port; on arrival you clear mainland (Zhuhai) or Macao immigration separately, then transfer to local buses, taxis or shuttles into the city. Zhuhai Port is near the Gongbei/Hengqin area.
How do I get to HZMB Hong Kong Port on the Hong Kong side?
Take franchised feeder buses B4 (Airport/AsiaWorld-Expo), B5 (Sunny Bay Station) or B6 (Tung Chung Station); some airport "A" routes also serve the port, plus green minibus and taxi. Motorists reach it via North Lantau Highway + Shun Long Road or the Tuen Mun–Chek Lap Kok Tunnel. The port is next to Hong Kong International Airport.
What should I note about self-driving the bridge under 港車北上?
"Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" lets eligible HK private cars self-drive to Guangdong via the HZMB without a quota, but you must book and complete formalities through official channels first. Note that after joining the mainland link road you must drive on the RIGHT — follow the on-site right-driving transition signs.
